Designer's Notes:

--- --- The Broadside IFV is a 2750 Star League-Era Infantry Fighting Vehicle especially designed to excel at urban combat. The unit is armed with a trio of 4-Tubed Short-Range Missile Launchers fed by a single ton of ammo. It's Tracked Motive configuration also ensured it's usefulness in jungles, while the presence of a ton and a half of dedicated Cargo stowage alongside it's easily convertible three ton Infantry Bay allowed it to function as a "mule" during long transits where it's APC-style bays would be supplanted by trucks. The Broadside would become a favorite among House Kurita for it's excellent anti-insurgency and pacification abilities, leading to the Broadside -K, a variant produced in 3050 for both use and export by the Draconis Combine.

--- --- The -K variant would be 5 tons heavier, and mount a larger four ton Infantry Bay while replacing the trio of SRMs with Ten-Tubed Medium Range Missile Launchers; themselves fed by a ton of ammo just like the launchers on the -K variant's predecessor. Although lacking the dedicated Cargo allotment of it's parent design, the -K partially compensates for this by simply retaining the convertible nature of the Infantry Bay found on the design that sired it. The -K variant would gain a ton of armor in this conversion while still managing to be even cheaper than the base version.

--- --- The Broadside would also become well liked among the SLDF, quickly becoming a hot ticket item among it's commanders. Commanders of garrison forces and infantry units were especially fond of it, ordering them in great numbers while even the SLDF Expeditionary Forces ended up requesting small numbers of them on account of their roomy Infantry Bays which provided the Explorer Corps with a comfy ride even when wearing bulky Environmental Suits. The cargo stowage proved popular among the Explorer Corps as well, offering a good place to store scientific samples and / or gear; a trait which, combined with the ease in which the Infantry Bay could be converted to haul Cargo, also made them popular even within the SLDF's BattleMech Regiments as second line supply haulers and ammo bearers for the Catapult or as a rough terrain complement to scout lances. The Broadside would prove a valuable asset in deterring Jenner ambushes and as such was coveted by quartermasters and procurement officers everywhere for it's anti-interdiction values.

--- --- Due to this popularity within the SLDF, two things would occur. The initial sales runs would prove woefully inadequate, leading to an expansion of the number of lines that would end up producing the Broadside, and the creation of a Fusion powered variant of the vehicle for SLDF "Royal" Units. The "Royal" variant would be ten tons heavier, powered by a 180-Rated Fusion Engine and would see not just the expansion of the Infantry Bay, but also the addition of CASE alongside a half ton increase in armor protection to the Rear of the vehicle. The set of Short-Range Missile Launchers found on the original Broadside are upgraded with Artemis IV FCS, a strange design feature fueled more by the "shiny new toy" effect than practicality; a clear effort to appeal to the brass and help justify what is a factory level overhaul of the entire design. The ton and a half Cargo Bay would be retained, as would the one ton magazine allocation for the "Royal" variants three SRMs; the "Royal" variant would also not only retain, but improve upon the modular nature of Broadside's Infantry Bay.

--- --- During the Jihad, the Broadside's simple construction and ubiquitous presence would lend itself well to Devlin Stone's Coalition, with both the standard and -K variants seeing extensive deployment against the Word of Blake in a variety of roles; with it being notably beloved for greatly reducing casualties during urban fighting as well as proving a boon to forces left behind on occupation or garrison duty. In the hell that was to become known as the Jihad, Stone would come across a forgotten cache of SLDF "Royal" Broadsides, these in particular would be assigned to Stone's best units as well as being utilized to safeguard important convoys from the threat of ambush against the Blakist's Raptor II BattleMech... a role they excelled at thanks to the Artemis IV FCS attached to their SRM-4 launchers. The Broadside would also provide pivotal logistics support and firepower to resistance forces within the coalition, where the utility of it's convertible Infantry Bays would not be diminished by the overall minor Cargo capacity of the vehicle.

--- --- Despite the first production models rolling off the line in 3072, it wouldn't be until 3082, a year after the conclusion of the Word of Blake's Jihad that the -R variant of the Broadside would become a staple within the armies of the Republic of the Sphere. The -R variant would see deployment in limited numbers with elite forces within Stone's Coalition, being employed alongside and in place of SLDF "Royal" Broadsides that were being produced in tandem with them. Throughout the Dark Age, these "Republic" variants would see limited allocation to the Republic Armed Forces along with allotments from the restarted production of the original SLDF "Royal" Broadsides. These "Republic Royal" versions, as they would come to be known as, would mount three Five-Tubed Multi-Missile Launcher systems fed by two tons of ammo supplemented by a pair of Small Lasers and a pair of Medium Lasers in the event that the Broadside were to run out of ammo.

--- --- The -R variant would sport the same Infantry and Cargo bays of the SLDF "Royal" variant, while also sporting a trailer hitch to provide some extra utility for the beefy 200-Rated Fusion Engine that powers it. Nine and a half tons of Heavy Ferro-Fibrous Armor provides protection that is identical to the -K variant, while the -R is itself ten tons heavier than it and five tons heavier than the "Royal" variant that it was based off of. The Republic of the Sphere's version of the SLDF "Royal" Broadside would sport a similar price, and at around 2 Million C-Bills for either of them, neither would come cheap. In fact one could have an entire Light Mech for the price of one of these Broadsides. One popular and definitive feature of the "Royal" and "Republic" variants that would become an integral selling point however, was their ability to carry Battle Armor; with the latter also permitting carriage of a ton and a half of gear along side them as well as long range indirect fire support courtesy of the MML-5s.

--- --- Overall, the Broadside would prove a popular IFV found all throughout the armies of the Inner Sphere. The configuration of it's three SRM-4s would eventually become the main point of contention for the Broadside, with the Front, Left and Right sides of the vehicle sporting a single Four-Tubed Short-Range Missile Launcher there would always be at least one and more often two launchers that would not be firing at any given time. Later on, the"Royal" and "Republic" models would become coveted for their ability to transport and support Battle Armor units; while the "Royal" variant would survive the fires of the Succession Wars by the very same merit. It is worth noting that with the recovery of the Helm Memory Core and the invasion of the Clans, the SLDF "Royal" variant of the Broadside would see a sudden resurgence around 3052 to assist the new Inner Sphere Standard Battle Armor, where it's SRMs would be used to help tip the balance in favor of the inferior Battle Armor in the face of the superior Clan Elementals.
