Designer's Blurb
------------------------

--- A design which makes use of the long-forgotten Null-Signature System as well as the Chameleon Light Polarization Shield, the Edge was engineered using incomplete Star League and Terran Hegemony design data for prototypes of a similar role, as well as captured Word of Blake blueprints for a similar 'Mech which would have used the Void Signature System and would have been used by the Mannei Domini.

--- The Terran Hegemony's design is recorded to have seen a few prototypes, armed priamrily with SRMs and Machine Guns, while the Star League data listed several blueprints for theoretical units wielding Flamers and Large Lasers alongside Endo-Steel and an eXtraLight Fusion Engine. The Hegemony design is recorded to have been scrapped due to it's poor armament and cost in relation to a vehicle of similar role, while the Star League version was plagued by heat issues, mainly due to the use of a pair of modified Nightwind Large Lasers.

--- These lasers underwent a retooling to strip out their cooling jackets and instead be directly integrated into the BattleMechs cooling system. These "Ported Lasers" significantly reduced the weight and space occupied by them and prevented regular fire from damaging the weapon itself, but added significant waste heat as a result. Added in to the fact that the Star League blueprints called for the use of the Null-Signature System and Chameleon Light Polarization Shield, themselves quite hot, and the designs were doomed from the start.

--- The Word of Blake data, on the other hand, called for a more conservative mix of Light Machine Guns, Heavy Flamers combined with a pair of Light PPCs mounted in the Head and Center Torso. While this design mounted the less space hungry Void Signature System and would have made use of Composite Structure and an eXtra eXtraLight Fusion Engine to attain extreme speed and stealth; the Word of Blake also deemed this design as being too costly when compared to vehicle forces acting in a similar role.

--- Enter the Republic of the Sphere, working from these designs created a 'Mech that was not only functional, but deemed worth it's costs. Starting from the Star League design's use of a Magna 245 XL Fusion Engine and building it onto their own ground-up chassis made with Reinforced Structure, the Republic placed a set of ER Medium Lasers and ER Flamers for incendiary work and usage against moderately hard targets. A quartet of Light Machine Guns gives the 'Mech some respectable anti-infantry punch and at good ranges to boot.

--- Meanwhile the EDX-7 would shape up to ditch the Void Signature System in favor of the Null-Signature System and Chameleon Light Polarization Shield, the design specs for which were found among the old Star League development records. The Small Cockpit of the Word of Blake design would be retained, while the use of CASE II and a Compact Gyro would further improve the EDX-7's battlefield longevity. What resulted from the Republic's efforts would be an expensive, robust and powerful support platform that could serve in limited deployment with highly trained special forces; allowing those teams to outmatch infantry, vehicles and to a lesser extent even fixed fortifications.

--- The Edge would boast six and half tons of Ferro-Fibrous armor to skin it's Reinforced chassis, while it's Small Cockpit, although cramped, still served as environmental sealing to protect it's pilot from harsh conditions and allow the unit to effectively support operatives without dedicating extra tonnage to it like a vehicle would. The Edge's use of a Light Polarization System and Null-Signature System allow flexibility in how it deploys those countermeasures. Likewise, these systems combined do not require an ECM Suite to function and confer no accuracy penalty to the unit like the Void Signature System would.

--- Overall the EDX-7 Edge would go on to become something of a myth on the battlefield, since it's small numbers and limited scope of justifiable deployment would never see it become a common staple in the Republic. Likewise the Republic of the Sphere would jealously guard this design, using it to support black-ops units as well as deploying it for razing operations and ambush assassinations against VIPs or high-value convoys; not dissimilar to the Word of Blake's Raptor.
