Bakumatsu refers to war representing the final years of the military government of the Kurita Coordinate.
Between 3089 and 3097, a war was fought within the Draconis Combine which ended its militaristic government policy and changed them from the feudal Kurita Coordinate to a modern empire ruled by the democratic government. The major ideological-political divide during this period was between the pro-imperial nationalists and the democratic forces that included the elite shinsengumi mechwarriors.
Although these two groups were the most visible powers, many other factions attempted to use the chaos of the Bakumatsu to seize personal power. Furthermore there were two other main driving forces for dissent: first, the growing resentment on the part of the individual regional lords in an attempt to maintain their power, and second, the growing anti-Star League sentiment following the war of independence between the new Kurita branch family and their new realm which was formed by Omika Kurita and her husband Victor Stiner-Davion from those Deep Periphery worlds they annexed whilst fighting the Clans from the main branch Kurita family and the old Draconis Combine within the Inner Sphere.
The turning point of the Bakumatsu was during the the Battle of Kagoshima when the pro-democratic forces of the shinsengumi defeated the pro-imperial nationalists and those representing the individual regional lords forces of the remaining Sword of Light Units.
Then like Runnymede and the Magna Carta of old a charter of rights and responsibilities was agreed by the final Lords and the Kurita Coordinator on the 15 September 3097 on Luthien, and as a means of making peace between the Warring Factions, it promised the Coordinator position would remain however from then on however as a purely ceremonial position within the Democratic Draconis Combine Government.
