------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
--- In truth, development of the Ettin began right after the Clan Invasion,
but was not prototyped until 3062. The prototype was much different than the
'Mech that would become the E211N Ettin. The prototype lacked lower arm or
hand actuators, had no Targeting Computer and used a quartet of Large Pulse
Lasers for it's principal armament.

--- The prototype was developed to as a testbed for DNI advancements, with a
focus on the use of the Double Cockpit to help resolve some of the DNI systems
inherent flaws. To that end it was equipped with such, and the entire thing
reportedly massed about ninety tons, although some speculated it was actually
larger than that. The prototype had it's energy conduits piped through the
chassis.

--- While the prototype had it's chassis developed off of the venerable
Atlas, what would become the "production" model Ettin actually used the Clan
Kodiak as the basis for it's development. This Ettin had a far more beastial
profile, with wide shoulders that were hunched up like a bear ready to strike,
but with low arms like a gorilla. The displacement of it's thick legs gave it
a squat disposition, making the E211N an inherently stable platform.

==Capabilities:==
--- Armed with four Plasma Rifles housed in it's arms... themselves
protected by a Small Shield on each of them, the Ettin does want for punch.
With eighteen Double Heat Sinks and six tons of ammo, the Ettin sports
magazines deep enough for two and a half minutes of sustained fire, and the
cooling capacity to make it count. A six ton Targeting Computer serves to
compensate for any inaccuracy that would be introduced by the protective arm
shields.

--- The ubiquitous Vlar 300 Standard Fusion Engine propels this mighty 'Mech
to a maximum ground speed of 54.0 km/s, while eighteen tons of Standard-Grade
BattleMech Armor give the Ettin a formidable aegis to complement the
arm-mounted shields. All of this is mounted upon a Standard BattleMech
Chassis, specially designed to allow the ammo to be piped from the Center
Torso and head mounted magazines into the hungry Plasma Rifles on the arms.

--- The Ettin fulfills the Juggernaut role, and works best when escorted by
faster Light and / or Medium 'Mechs which can screen it from long-range
threats. Although this hundred ton behemoth is acceptably mobile for an
Assault 'Mech, it is still painfully slow. While it is well-protected by it's
shields and thickly slabbed armor; the Ettin can be whittled away at by
Snipers and LRM-wielding Missile Boats if not properly supported.

==Battle History:==
--- Reports of Ettins go back as far as the early years of the FedCom Civil
War, but it wasn't until the outbreak of the Jihad that these sightings were
finally confirmed. The Mannei Domini would use these monstrous 'Mechs to
decimate enemy forces, as well as conduct terror missions.

--- After the formation of the Republic of The Sphere, the Ettin would become
a rare, but not unheard of sight in the hands of Knights of The Sphere. Oddly
enough, there would be a large number of these exported to the Clans, with the
Ghost Bear Dominion being among the biggest importers of these.

--- The Snake Alliance as well as Clan Diamond Shark and Clan Snow Raven
would also end up buy Ettins in significant numbers, while Clan Hell's Horses
would import a small number of them as well. The design would slowly
proliferate throughout the Dark Ages due to it's relatively common parts,
easy to fabricate Shields and readily manufactured Plasma Ammo, with the
scarcity of the Targeting Computer proving to be of little consequence.

==Variants:==
--- The Ettin has no Variants, being more of a specialized design by nature
and a rare one at that. It did however have a prototype version weighing
90-Tons and sporting a quartet of Large Pulse Lasers.

--- This Ettin Prototype weighed 90-Tons, was cooled by 20 Double Heat Sinks,
mounted two crude Small Shields which were only half as effective as later
models and lacked a Targeting Computer.

--- The prototype also sported a Dual Cockpit and required a DNI to operate.
It had a much different profile than the E211N that it sired, with vestigial
arms that made standing up after a fall much more difficult.

==Notable 'Mechs & MechWarriors:==
--- While the Ettin is perhaps most notable for it's use by the mysterious
Mannei Domini, many later pilots would remark on how it's Small Cockpit wasn't
all that small, more like; snug, or compact. Although rumors remain
unconfirmed, it is widely believed among the intelligence forces of the Great
Houses that Jorgen Nerekov may have suffered his brain injury due to a mishap
during a secretive DNI testing program.

--- This program was allegedly begun shortly after the Clan Invasion, but at
the outbreak of the FedCom Civil War the project was moved further underground
and eventually went rogue. It is assumed that the first Ettins were produced
here as a means of conducting DNI testing, presumably funded by Shengli Arms
with aid from the Word of Blake.

--- These rumors are also backed up by the appearance of Ettins as early as
3063, with tales of a ferocious 'Mech spitting balls of fire with inhuman
accuracy. How much truth there is to these tales is another matter, however it
is worth noting that many of the BattleROMs seemed to conviently corrupt or go
black during the times of these supposed encounters, whle the few which were
recovered intact did in fact show a mysterious 'Mech.
