- Built during the Star League and marketed as a budget defense vehicle, the Mark XXXI is a versatile infantry support tank. Although very slow, the Mark XXXI features bulldozing equipment and bears a fearsome armament of two Class 20 Autocannons supported by Machine Guns. Relatively thick armor allows the Mark XXXI to take a significant beating, although it still best deployed in cities or against inferior ground forces.

- Both the Mark 31 and the Mark 32 were designed simultaneously, with the Mark 32 placing greater emphasis on assaulting fortifications. Just as ploddingly slow as the Mark 31, the Mark 32 also retains the former designs complement of weaponry. However, where the Mark 32 differs is in that it is ten tons heavier than it's sister design, better armored, and sports a pair two Ton Infantry Bays. The Mark 32 also features 500 kg of stowage for any miscellaneous equipment that might need to be carried in.

- The Mark 33 was built after the commercial success of the Mark 31 and the Mark 32. Post Star League it is the rarest of the three on account of it's Fusion Engine and heavy use of LosTech. The design aimed to take the core concepts of the Mark 31, namely infantry support, and pack it all onto a 50-Ton chassis that could moved by in a Light Vehicle Bay. This was largely successful, and with the replacement of the Class 20 Autocannons with a pair of Lubalin Ballistics Class 10-X Autocannons the Mark 33 gained some much needed range.

- The use of Ferro-Fibrous Armor and CASE helps to alleviate some of the Mark 33's defensive problems, while the inclusion of a single ton and a half Infantry Bay allows the Mark 33 to be used as an IFV, albeit in a rather limited fashion. Four tons of ammo afford the LBX Autocannons 10 salvos of shot and shell alike, while the Machine Guns allow it to mow down enemy infantry who dare to get too close. However, with it's painfully low top speed and paltry five tons of armor, the Mark 33 was not without it's fair share of weaknesses as well.

These seem to be a good city/urban combat vehicles or used to box in an enemy in close terrain. I understand the variants, however, why were they needed? What caused the company to make two variants that more or less upgrade something but not all things? What was the driving fact behind the need to make the changes?

In a word, Marketability. The three variants were designed to compete with one another.

- The Mark 31 was a better (and cheaper) choice for those who wanted something to bolster a garrison on the cheap. It was also pitched at Mercs as being a cheaper alternative to the Demolisher, which was more expensive by nearly 200,000 C-Bills.

- The Mark 32 was a better Assault Platform. The Bulldozer and it's pair of 2 ton Infantry Bays were useful for forces that could field Combat Engineers and / or Battle Armor. However, not everyone would need that kind of capability, and the Mark 32 was bigger and more expensive than the Mark 31.

- The Mark 33 was meant to marketed to the Star League. It was still pretty cheap, cheaper than a Demolisher too. It had more range in every respect, it fit inside a Light Vehicle bay and could carry a squad of Foot Infantry. However, it lacked protection of the other two, and required more advanced tech to maintain.

By making these three variants, the company could ensure that the customer walked away with at least one of them. Those who had money and or advanced tech (Great Houses, Star League) might want the Mark 32's ability to conduct Assaults against fixed positions and prepared Defenses. Those same clients might also want the Mark 33's ability to run on hydrogen and fit in a smaller DropShip bay. Those who were cost conscious would appreciate the Mark 32 as an alternative to the Demolisher and to a lesser extent the Atlas, while the Mark 31 carried universal appeal.

They look like they might have the same profile, so mixing them up might confuse the enemy into which one they were facing.
The infantry bays, looks to be the reason for the 10 ton addition to the first unit, which would appeal to those that want a one vehicle for all occasions.
The third one seems out of place. 30 tons lighter then the first, with a fusion engine in it, would seem to be a separate vehicle entirely.
Unless that should be the first tank developed, then the others came out.
The ICE ones look like they would be a little easier on the maintenance, but seems like a heavier unit meant for point blank combat.

Outside of the game, I would think they are all done to use the Sponsoons.

Maybe something to guard factories or cities, but nothing that would be ideal for outside of restricted areas.

Yes, having a marketable product is great, but again what brought about the need to upgrade? Things aren't just done cause the company wants it, not with armored vehicles. The House Lords and the SLDF aren't just going to rush in to buy something without a need or buy an upgrade when the original is doing them just fine. So what I am asking is what event causes the company to go hey we can make two more versions that can offer more.
