- Designed and built during the Succession Wars, the Mobile Autocannon Gun Emplacement more commonly know as "Mage", was a thirty ton tracked AFV. Each Mage housed two AC/5s mounted in a casemate chassis and fed by a shared two ton magazine. This served as the vehicle's main (and only) armament. The term, "mobile" is used here in the loosest possible sense of the word and denotes that the Mage is able to be put into position under it's own power.

- However, once the Mage is in position, the "mobile" part ends and the "gun emplacement" part begins. The Mage was never made to serve as a tank, tank destroyer, mech buster or frontline combat vehicle of any stripe. The Mage was designed and built to be a cheap, self-mobile pair of Autocannons which could be used as part of a defense in depth, or from an ambush position. Cheap was the attribute that was stressed the most during the design of the Mage; at thirty tons and with it's role as a self-mobile prepared defense system, you could move a lot of Mages in a Dropship's cargo hold if you were on a budget.

- The Mage proved popular for it's cost and saw use by a variety of forces throughout the Inner Sphere. The Mage was often used to bolster a beach head, where it's self-mobile nature meant neither trucks nor tractors nor PBIs were needed to put one into position; you just needed a few Jerry Cans and a driver. Mages were also often deployed when small forces (like mercenaries for example) would be preparing an ambush. Being Self-Mobile and able to fit in a Light Vehicle Bay meant that these smaller formations could get them into position without extra support.

- At the end of the day, the Mage is a great little AFV if you need to put some heavy firepower somewhere and leave it there for a while. It's great if you want to rapidly establish a line, as it's 10~20 km/h is perfectly fine for tactical positioning. It's great for establishing an ambush at a choke point or defending a backwater world. If you want a pair of Class 5 Autocannons somewhere and you don't want to lug it around on a trailer, the Mage might be right for you. If you want a mobile autocannon toting pillbox, the Mage is definitely right for you.
