Can somebody explain to me why the image in the infobox in this article is a valid link but doesn't show in the article?

Is this somehow connected to the "invisible" adjacent maps that we discussed in the Operation Doneve beta, where Gruese and I somehow couldn't access a file that was clearly there in the wiki database and showed up for other users?

If the link isn't working for you, then you might want to know, I got it to show up.
And it definitely looks like it is a Robotech mech.
It does sound like it may be the problem you had with the beta.
Or did it get fixed between your post and mine?

Nope. Curiously, it still shows an empty image with a blue link to the file for me. Clicking on the link brings me to the equally "empty" file article, where however the thumbnail pic is shown at the bottom. Just like with that map image Gruese and I couldn't see.

I've emailed you screenshots of what I'm seeing (the second is the file page, when clicking on the blue file name link that is in the place of the image in the infobox of the main article).
My browser is a Firefox 73.0.1 64-bit. Upon hitting F12 I get no errors and these three warning messages:

I have the same issue with various articles now and again. This includes when I upload new or replacement images. Clearing my browser's cache doesn't help.

I cannot see the infobox image in the article. After clicking on the link for the image, I can see the image with no issues. This is both in Firefox and Chrome.
Chrome has 1 warning that says:

That seems to have worked... partly.
I can now see the Ostroc MkII image all right, and the Baltazar map image as well. But curiously, I still cannot see the Beta Regulus map image.
How is it possible that the fix doesn't seem to work in all instances, particularly in the case of Beta Regulus/Baltazar which seems to be the virtual same situation yet one works and the other still doesn't?

Whatever the issue is, it's still unresolved. I found out today that the image of Loren Coleman is similarly affected - the infobox provides no actual image but a blue link to the image file. I know that I used to see the image there (I've edited this article in the past).
It may also be worth noting that this "hidden image" effect seems very random. I first noticed it for star map .svg files from Operation Doneve but have since seen it in .jpg files as well, including files that I had uploaded myself such as the Ostroc MkII image.

I can see the primary image, but not the (current) thumbnail in the file history section, or other areas where the thumbnail is displayed. It says, "Error creating thumbnail: Unable to save thumbnail to destination." I have received this error numerous times over the last few years.

OK, I found a bunch of file permissions on the server were misconfigured. They should theoretically all be fixed now, and hopefully thumbnails can be generated in all cases.
I'm going to test it a bit, but if anyone has issues uploading images, please let me know.

All invisible images that I checked seem to be fixed for me now, save one: The Ostroc Mk II image is still invisible for me.
I'm at a loss as to how that's possible. I uploaded it myself years ago and everything worked just fine until it didn't.

It seems totally random, such as there being a batch of rank insigia and one or two random ones will not show for me. Also, the files in question are a wild mix of jpgs, pngs and svgs. With some, I can see thumbnails displayed; with others not even that. Some showed blanks in the file list but were there all right when I clicked to the file/article.
No rhyme nor reason that I could discern.

I think these are all OK now! I fixed yet another server configuration issue, which would have caused those images to not appear.

I didn't check all files from my list two posts up, just the first six and a handful others, jpg, png, gif. They all work now.
The three special cases marked with "missing file" still have that error message though.
And the last one (and only svg file in the list) also still doesn't work for me:
"The requested URL /9/9f/Lum_3151.svg was not found on this server."

Hm, yeah the 3 files marked as missing aren't on the filesystem anywhere, and I can't find them in any backups.

It's been a while, but I ran into this problem again.

The thumbnail image for the latest version uploaded does not appear for me. "Error creating thumbnail: Unable to save thumbnail to destination"
For what it's worth, and if my memory is correct, I have had this problem mostly when uploading files who's file name does not correctly reflect the file type. For example, there are numerous images with JPG file names that have had PNG images uploaded in their place without the file name being changed. When I try to fix the discrepancy, this error might occur.

Same issue when uploading a new version of the image. Previous image was JPG, new is PNG. Everything looked fine until I moved the page to change the file name.

I think I've finally found the gremlin that has been causing all of these issues. I know I've said this before, but I swear this time I've got it! 
I believe this was due to _sometimes_ image thumbnails needing to be generated later, after the image was uploaded. We have a "runJobs" script that takes care of asynchronous jobs, and it was running as the wrong system account. That has been fixed, and it looks like all of the old image thumbnails work now after I've fixed permissions again.
