The need to upgrade older mechs was something the Inner Sphere as a whole faced after the Battle of Tukayyid, none more so than ComStar for its ComGuard.
Both Renault-Prime Industries and Krupp saw this as a chance to really dig into the older mechs and try to fix the glaring issues, and yes, in some cases reinvent the well. Using the best model produced by RPI, the Flashman mech, both companies set about address what they saw as the main issues with the mech, mainly the heat issue as well as the need to modernize it across the board. The final outcome the 14K walked off the factory floor two months before the WoB invasion of Terra. Luckily the plans managed to make it off-planet, but not before the factory and its staff was captured. The mech is seen in many of the WoB Protectorate Militia forces as well as the ComGuad.

Solid post-Clan Invasion upgrade of the 8K. Drops the flamer which isn't as useful against Clan elementals than the unarmored infantry it was meant for, and the lighter skeleton provides more heat sinks. I could go for one of the large lasers being ER variety for some more range to pick off light mechs trying to stay out of range but at 5/8 its not critical.
Your writeup makes me wonder why ComGuard didn't make a 'Clanbuster' version of the Flashman by upgrading the armor to Ferro-Fibrous. It saves a ton and by dropping the flamer you'd get another: that's two double heat sinks added with a simple field refit. (Only reason SLDF didn't have it with either Ferro Fibrous or Endo Steel was to justify the -7K downgrade.) I guess it just wasn't common enough in the ComGuards to bother.

Thanks, yeah I am not sure why they didn't do a simple upgrade, I started off looking at what could make it better and went from there.
