Lore

The Messer is a very Lyran weapon system with a very Capellen solution. Built
in 3154, the Messer is a long range 70 ton tank, with a very simple mission,
bring down clan mechs. Made with the biggest gun the lyrans could field, the 20
ton Improved Heavy Gauss Rifle, the Messer is based on the idea of a self
propelled gun, with especially heavy front armour, decent ground speed and a
ability to strike reliably at range. With a insanely well mounted primary
weapon system, decent ammo reserves good for over 3 minutes of sustained
combat, and a targeting computer, the Messer can bring down at range many forms
of clan mechs.

Expensive, and well protected, the Lyran high command chose to augment this
vehicle with both a high powered XL Engine, and a Targeting computer, and
Stealth armour. A departure for the Lyran Commonwealth, its stealth
capabilities prevent it being detected before it fires, while its Targeting
Computer allow it to land that first blow in a key location. The vehicle is also
Amphibious, to allow it increased operational range, and allowing it to cross
bodies of water if bridges are damaged or cannot support its 70 ton weight.

Piloted by largely expert marksmen within the Lyran military, the vehicles
price tag has seen it largely deployed on only key fronts, where clan mechs
will be present. However given its expense and single weapon system, the
vehicle should never be deployed without support... however Lyran combat theory
has led to it too often being outflanked.

Okay, nice StuG, having said that, you need a secondary weapon to deal with infantry and battlearmor. This thing is great for the role of SPG or city defense, but it will get eaten alive by faster mechs and other vehicles.

A single pintel-mounted medium laser. Huzzah.

One and a half tons of armour could be used up to give it some forward mounted machine guns to help deal with infantry and light mechs.

Sadly due to its stealth armour we could not mount another medium laser without losing 4 tons of armour. Or a ton of ammo and 3 tons of armour

Ok typo in the stats.
It says standard armor, not stealth.
.

It's said the developers refused to allow the IS to build the clantech. The TCs would only need 4 of them had they done so.
It wouldn't be a whole lot, but one mg with a half ton of ammo might work, meaning only 1 ton of armor is removed.
There really doesn't seem to be much you can do without changing a major component. The 4/6 move looks to be something it kind of needs, so slowing it down wouldn't be a good idea.
If I knew more of armor strikes against tanks a little better, I would say move just a little armor off the front and put it on the sides, as now they can be hit as well as the front when incoming fire comes from there, but it may not be necessary.

Since it's a 3150's design, you could probably go Mixed-tech. C-spec targeting computer, C-spec ECM, C-spec CASE...

Also, I don't suppose double heat sinks are allowed on vehicles?

No dhs on vehicles. It is a topic that has and still does get discussed from time to time. Even if it is just the sinks the engine hides, you still can't use them on vehicles.

I had thought of suggesting using some clan tech, but too many units seem to do so in order to min/max things. It is very annoying as it brings up another topic that has been discussed. The bs of the IS not making clan tech. But that is another thread.

Given the use of the iHGR, Stealth armor, and speed, it seems pretty well locked without changing a major component.

I really don't like the arbitrary nerfs and limitations on anything that isn't a BattleMech. But short of playing with custom rules, there's not a whole lot that can be done about it.

I almost never use mixed-tech to min-max things, though; I use mixed tech because it allows me to experiment with hardware combinations that would never happen otherwise, and also to create things that push the limits in very unique roles.

Two optional rules listed in Tactical Operations which might help, for anyone willing to use them, are Patchwork Armor and Fractional Accounting. I particularly like Patchwork Armor because you could make something only use Stealth Armor on the front and sides (but still enable it to dissipate heat on the rear, where nobody is looking). If it is intended to only ever face towards the enemy, then this would allow you to put armor with better protection per ton on the back. This could give you just enough tonnage for a pintel-mounted medium laser with a laser insulator, improved cooling jacket, and an additional heat sink.
