Basic princliple …. For an alt universe in a homage to Battlestar Galactica, and others, …

Has anyone considered a Battletech Universe 2.0 where at the end of the Star League an event of unprecedented destruction occurred. All the known worlds throughout the Inner Sphere where struck by a jump capable ship – the resulting explosion killed everything on the world in an a single massive inferno.

All worlds are now dead with only a basic / nil atmosphere … with only ruins pockmarked over these worlds as tombstones to the once golden Star League era …

As for the remining humanity, they are now part of fleet of ships (from a few ships that act as mercenaries for larger fleets to very large fleets who attempt to dominate vast area’s of space as well as pirate fleets) – all searching for any habitable world they can - whist simultaneously searching old worlds for anything to use in order to survive – be it food or a technological artifact … etc.

Problem is there are a massive number of fleets within the ruins of the inner sphere – who are also searching for relics to help their people survive … as a mechwarrior of your fleet your duty is not only to protect your fleet, you are also to act as a techno archaeologist – to find and bring home any artifact (etc.) to assist your home fleet and your people survive …

Thoughts?
Get thee to Coventry … Now is the winter of our discontent, made glorious by this daughter of Tharkad … Our army shall march through. Well to New Avalon tonight.

There is no real need to go that far.
You can easily reproduce something similar to old/new Battlestar Galactica with the existing worldbuilding.

In some ways the Exodus itself has a lot of similar elements to it.

Apart from that, you can do lots of stuff in the BT Universe, as long as you go further out into the deeper Periphery.

There is an easy way to do something like this. The Wolverines could very well be set up like this. If you ignore or maybe splinter the ex clan so they don't become part of WOB/COMSTAR, they could very well be a nomadic fleet.
Worried their ex clansmen are hunting them, they did not decide to settle on worlds so much as only have a few automated facilities they set up for things like mines, and continue to remain space borne, so they can flee at a moments notice.
One of their raids when they were fleeing the clans initially, going thru the DC, could well have seized some experimental ships, like hydroponics vessels, that would allow them to do so. Maybe some experimental plants that grow well in space, but were not all that health at the time they were tested, so were not put into full use.
Another possible tech may be a Yardship like system that was experimenting with large grav decks, so they could build a few stations to have populations remain healthy indefinitely in space.

A few research stations or maybe data caches could have been part of the early exodus road, which is why they went that way while leaving the IS during the Kerensky flight, or the Wolverines.

Or go another route that someone found out Comstars/WOB plans and fled before they could be hunted down and found something like this as well. Now they continue to remain on the move so they can not be trapped.

Now if you want the entire IS to be like this, then there isn't much I can say. It would have to have happened just as the K-F drive was invented. Could be a mysterious virus weakens people bones to the point of not being able to withstand anything but micro gravity.

The Wolverines didn't become part of WoB/ComStar. That was just propaganda to lure the Ghost Bears into the Jihad against WoB.
