Consider the following image world image, however not as from its source, let us transpose it into a Battletech Setting of the Inner Sphere

https://genkoku.fandom.com/wiki/Landia?file=World_Map_%2528Web_Novel%2529.png

Grand Chaos Empire – Lyran
Demon Lord Territory – DC
Elfrieden / Amidonia – FS
Star Dragon – Capellan
Torgis – FWL
Orthodoxy – ComStar (Terran – a hangover from the Star League Era)
Mercenary – Magistracy
Dragon Knight – Taurian
Eastern – Outworlds
Spirit – Rim Worlds
Archipelago – Tortuga …. For example

Clans – yet to be added to the map – suggest much closer than Battletech ever considered in the interest of establishing wars / reducing logistical issues etc…

One of the main issues (problem) of the game is when the FC was established. However, if you add more realms this becomes less of an issue. In actuality it would increase their problems in attempting to maintain the corridor open – as their land mass increases do they have the forces necessary to maintain this?
Also do they have the forces to blast their way through the Magistracy or the Outworlds / Taurians to link up?

Also could the DC and the Capelland merge and in so doing cutting off the Lyran Bulge towards the Taurians at the same time?

By juxta positioning many of the realms from the outer periphery into the centre then increasing their military capabilities could this possibly make for a more interesting game circa 3000?

My question therefore is whether the original five houses numbers and positioning was a possible error, (limiting its future development) Should the game have started with ten to thirteen realms of various (equal-ish) sizes and technological capabilities in a setting similar to the above map in order to increase the number of wars and make the game more complex from the get go?

By increasing the number of “periphery” states and then transposing then into the heart of the IS this then requires of all states a more flexible – alliance driven approach to war – lest they be attacked by multiple states who are also upon their borders.

This thus assists the game to become more interesting than that of the original 5 great houses.

You don't even have to bother with the odd names. Just use the entities that existed before the houses formed properly. The FWL basically has all those regions listed in the FWL. Just use them. The rest have their areas as well.

It is nice to see someone didn't try to follow the story line.
I guess making up new names, allows you to really get off the beaten track, and not even bother with the canon line.

By why worry about the 3000 era? Just take it from the fall of the SL, if that even existed. Hell, make it so the SL didn't form and have them start fighting from before the SL was formed.
The nuke fest may not have even come about, as no nation has the lands to hide behind a wall of dead worlds, if the mega states didn't form.

It also brings up the question of tech, and what did or didn't get made. Defiance would probably have never been made, as the SL wouldn't have existed.
Might be interesting to have land and space based 'nations'. The space based would probably sell their services for basic resources, which may make them hated by all that had to go against a fleet.

It would be far better to remove all references to canon names in this case. This will prevent a lot of the issues that arise from having relative names, like the Lyran being connected to the Taurian. Might also suggest going so far as to change family names of who rules all the realms as well.
