Just a quick question.

When using a MML, can you switch between ammo types.

So I have a MML 5. Can I load it with say standard LRM and SRM ammo?
Just switch between them to allow me more flexibility.
If I can do this, then I can do the same with special ammo types, right?

Now if I can switch, can I share ammo between two launchers?
For simplicity, I would assume the same size eg only 5s. Not 3, 2 5s and a 9.

So have 1 MML 5 with LRM ammo and another MML 5 with SRM ammo. Then I can switch from both on LRM to both firing SRM.

Just trying to clarify it is all.

Yes. That's the main point of MMLs (the secondary point being to make Clan ATMs look pointless.)

Yes.

Yes, which gives MMLs quite an advantage over Clan ATMs. Also, MMLs can fire LRMs indirectly, unlike ATMs, which are stuck with their direct-fire, ATM-only ammo.

Yes, just like one ton of ammo can feed multiple machine guns or autocannons.

The Total Warfare MML description hits the high points:

Quote:
The multi-missile launcher can fire SRMs or LRMs, and each
missile type retains its characteristic damage and ranges.
MMLs can use standard SRM or LRM ammunition, as well as
all missile special munitions that can be used by either LRM
or SRM launchers (see p. 140). This includes Artemis and Narc-
compatible missiles.

Damage is assigned per the type of missile fired; LRMs fired
from an MML are divided into 5-point Damage Value groupings,
while SRMs are divided into 2-point groupings.

Missile Ammo: A unit can carry LRM and SRM ammo slots for
the MML, announcing during attack declaration which ammo
type will be used.

Ammo usage from shared bins is addressed elsewhere, in the Ammo Expenditure section of TW. You were on target to not mix MML sizes. Quoting TW on missile launcher ammo use:

Quote:
Each weapon can draw ammo from any ammo bin that carries
the right ammunition for that weapon. The ammo need not be
carried in the same location as the weapon. For example, an
LRM-15 in the left arm of a ’Mech can use LRM-15 ammo carried in
any location, but cannot use LRM-5, -10, or -20 ammo. In addition,
provided the weapon is drawing from the correct ammo slot and
multiple ammo slots of the correct type exist, a player can draw
ammo from whichever slot he wants in a given turn, switching
around each turn at his discretion. For example, a ’Mech mounting
an LRM-15 has three LRM-15 ammo slots, one in the right arm,
one in the left torso and one in the left arm. In three consecutive
turns the player fires the LRM-15. In each turn, the player can put
a hash mark next to a different ammo slot (one for each turn);
three hash marks in one location (again, one for each turn); two in
one slot and one in another slot; and so on.

So if you had an MML 3 and an MML 9 on a 'Mech, they'd need their own SRM and LRM bins. On the other hand, if you had four MML 9s on a 'Mech then they could all share the same single SRM and single LRM bin.

Thanks for that, Mike.

I needed the clarification. So their flexibility does make them a viable alternative.
Now to think of designs that could fit them in.

Now if only MMLs could fire torpedos.

Not sure why it couldn't.
I know it wouldn't be useful on a lot of worlds, but it may well be something to defend underwater facilities, such as the Davion underwater command centers.

It might also be worth fitting units that would be sent to water worlds.

Might be a bit much, but have a multi-torp unit be allowed to fire off missiles as well, making it more useful for those worlds and attacking from the waterways.

The concept does have merit.

Also on the note of MML ammo, I could see people using Inferno LRMs, and then following up with Heat-Seeking SRMs. That would honestly be a pretty effective tactic.
