The Mechani Standard Tractor, Tracked (MSTT, or colloquially known as the "Misty") is a standardized vehicle designed to use a series of standardized omni-configurable trailers. The system is the backbone of ground-based military logistics in the Vela Corridor, filling roles in supply transportation, utility and (less commonly) direct combat roles.

Tractor Design
The first version of the Mechani Standard Tractor in 2722 was designed by Mercurio Corporation. They were based off of vehicles used by what was then the Gumerian Association, a looser confederacy-style nation of smaller states before they were united into the Gumerian Diktat. Many of the less well developed Gumerian planets relied on massive tractor vehicles weighing hundreds of tons, towing behind them dozens of much smaller trailer units to remote colonies. This tractor-trailer system served as inspiration for the Mechani Alliance's new general-purpose land logistics vehicle.

The Mechani Standard Tractor design is a fairly unremarkable vehicle: The vehicle's outsized engine is its lifeblood, and it is generally not noticeable from the outside until the tractor begins pushing trailers several times its size at fairly reasonable speeds. The Block I and IIs are armored reasonably for vehicles of their size, and the Block IIIs onwards are very well protected. This helps them to survive stray hits from artillery or ambushes, but the tractor component is normally entirely unarmed unless the crew modifies them in the field.

The tractor can operate in both push and pull configurations. The push configuration can be a little awkward however: As the tractor is lower than its trailers, the driver must drive purely through cameras mounted on the front of the trailer, which is reportedly taxing when used for long periods of time, but may be necessary for certain trailer configurations such as minesweepers. Similarly, when operating in the pull configuration the tractor uses a rearview camera when backing up. The trailer connection is also used to transmit power from the tractor to the trailer (which lacks a separate powerplant and control systems unless specially ordered to have them).

Finally, the trailer connection can be severed remotely activated by a big red button, allowing the tractor to "eject" the larger and cheaper trailer and high-tail itself out of dangerous situations that they otherwise would be unable to escape from while tethered, as the tractors are deceptively fast when free. This technique is called "Wallavacing" or just "Wallavac", named after a marsupial on the Mechani planet of Eucario that can eject a baby from their pouch as a distraction mechanism to escape from predators. Velan trailers are not manned or, if manned, operate from the tractor unit, so this is not an issue for them. Inner Sphere tractor-trailer units often modify the trailers themselves to be manned in order to operate weaponry; the trailer gunners returning to base after being on the receiving end of the "Wallavac" option themselves are rarely amused (assuming they survive the encounter).

Trailer Design
Mechani trailers are basic: No integrated engine or control systems by default makes them dependent on their tractor unit's power plants, but they do feature integration with the tractor system, including front and back cameras and emergency severable capable connections to the tractor unit's powerplant.

Before 3055, the trailers lacked omni-technology: Mercurio Corporation instead made many different types of trailers for different roles, such as normal cargo haulers, liquid cargo, insulated cargo, engineering utility trailers, artillery pieces, and so on. When the Vela Shield state-sponsored mercenary group brought back salvage of Clan omni-mechs, Mercurio Corp petitioned the Mechani government for funds to research and produce omni-technology. While funding was provided, it wasn't sufficient for large breakthroughs; the Mechani Alliance was instead focusing its efforts to try and reverse-engineer HarJel and the Clan's improved version of Battle Armor.

The result was that the Crossroadian company Taneli Industries was the first to crack omni-technology, testing and fielding them on small armored vehicles. Mercurio Corporation contacted Taneli Industries with a lucrative partnership offering: Taneli would provide trailer chasses and omni configurations while Mercurio would provide the tractor base. Taneli Industries accepted the offer, and by 3060 the production of omni-trailers exceeded that of the normal trailers. While a few customers still order "classic" trailers without omni integration (namely cargo configurations), these are largely considered obsolescent.

Inner Sphere customers often order far more trailers than they can handle with their MSTT tractors. It appears they frequently use their own native armored vehicles to tow these trailers to enhance the capabilities of their vehicles in certain areas despite the associated speed penalties. For instance, it's fairly common to see Vedettes hauling 10T trailers loaded with active probes in sensor sweeps, or Magis towing 40T trailers with Sniper artillery pieces to make an impromptu artillery vehicle. Mercurio Corp does not condone using these trailers without the proper tractor and will not honor any service agreements to customers found to have "misused" the trailers in this way.

Deployment
The Mechani Standard Tractor-Trailer System has been in use by the Mechani Alliance since the 27th century, by the Republic of Crossroad since 2833, and the Amethyst Legion since 2950, making it the most common ground-based military logistics system in the Vela Corridor. Mercurio Corp has spread its customer base to the Inner Sphere since the Inner Sphere as well, and the system's high degree of customizability and overall efficacy helped it make large production contracts in both the Inner Sphere and its Periphery; the vehicle might become just as ubiquitous there as it is in the Vela Corridor by the start of the 33rd century if it continues to see the same level of commercial success.

In Crossroadian service, the Mechani Standard Tractor-Trailer (MSTT) entered service in early 2833. In 2832 the Crossroadians, in the midst of the Crossroad-Skaret War, interred a Mechani science Jumpship, misidentified as a Skarian scout, that had stumbled on the Crossroadian capital of Aleksandria. This led to the 2932-2933 New Year's Standoff between the two factions (who until now didn't know about each other; the Crossroadians were a fairly recent arrival to the Corridor). The standoff ended with a successful diplomatic blitz and turned what could have been a second war into material support from the Mechani Alliance, which itself had reason to oppose the Skaret Empire.

While Mechani heavy vehicles and Battlemechs get the most attention from casual enthusiasts of the Crossroad-Skaret war, the most impactful vehicle was actually the Mechani Standard Tractor-Trailers (MSTT), which the Crossroadians shortly dubbed "Mistys". This is mainly because of what they replaced: the J-27 Ordnance Transport.

J-27s were the backbone of the Star League army, but their slow speed, nearly unarmored chassis and open stowage of ammo provided an obvious unfixable vulnerability. The attacking Skaret Empire for its part made it a point to actively seek out and destroy these highly exposed vehicles, an immensely successful effort thanks to the vehicle's flaws. While these flaws were not unknown by this point (they had already been highlighted during the Star League Civil War), there simply was not enough time to fix them or make replacement vehicles. The vehicles suffered massive losses and became known by Crossroadian crews as "widowmakers". General Aaron DeChavilier himself described Crossroad's J-27 as the "greatest asset the Skaret Empire has."

The MSTTs arrived in 2833 and immediately revolutionized Crossroad's defensive efforts. Though significantly heavier than the J-27, they were faster, well armored, and their trailer's ammunition bays were protected with CASE, which made even unlucky penetrating shots to the trailer less immediately fatal. The Crossroadians requested as many Mechani MSTTs as they could spare, and the vehicles were used to replace J-27s whenever possible. When the Crossroadian forces led by Gen. McEvedy made a daring attack on the Skaret Empire's capital planet in Operation RUBICON, they loaded the ground logistical elements with MSTTs; J-27s were nowhere to be found. After the war, the Crossroadians replaced what few J-27s were left with MSTTs as fast as possible.

(Mercurio Corporation loves using this as a case study in their sales pitch to other customers, but their aggressive marketing sometimes rubs Crossroadians the wrong way. Primarily because, although the MSTT was vital to Crossroad's war effort, they believe the excessive focus on the hardware takes away from the effort and sacrifices Crossroadians actually made to win the war. Secondarily, they object to being described as the "second strongest nation" in the Vela Corridor.)

The Vela Shield state-sponsored mercenary group brought MSTTs for logistical work during their campaign to support the Inner Sphere during the Clan Invasion. The vehicles were effective and the new vehicles also drew some attention from the Inner Sphere factions. MSTTs were eventually by Mercurio Corp directly to the Inner Sphere factions, and were deployed in place of older J-27s and other logistical units on campaigns like Operations BULLDOG and SERPENT.

The Clans were initially not allowed to purchase the vehicles, but this changed with the chaos of the Jihad. The Word of Blake's indiscriminate wrath saw a diverse coalition formed against them, and the Mechani Alliance and Crossroad Republic both approved sale of certain vehicles to certain coalition clans, notably the Nova Cats and the Wolves-in-Exile.

The MSTTs are becoming increasingly common in the Inner Sphere and as such see many conflicts within the Inner Sphere, however the Vela Corridor still holds most of the MSTT units and related industries and thus effectively decide who gets what. It's been observed by the Inner Sphere that you can determine when a Vela Corridor state has been angered by an offending state when that state's neighboring rivals see an unexpected surge of MSTT systems in their inventory, and it's been suggested how angered they are can be mathematically determined by calculating the size of the MSTT influx. This theory can be demonstrated with Jade Falcon-Lyran Commonwealth border: Just one year after the conclusion of each of the two Crossroad-Jade Falcon wars (3079-3081, 3110-3115) the Lyrans and the Wolves-in-Exile "discovered" large numbers of unmarked pristine MSTT systems that had allegedly fallen off the back of a Dropship.

Tractor Variants (Blocks)
(2722): The original "Block I" tractor design had a 200 ICE and 4 tons of armor, but the heavier engine made the vehicle 5 tons heavier and slower than other tractors. Quickly phased out by the Block IIs in Mechani service, but these originals have a knack for turning up in odd places in the Vela fringes and even the Inner Sphere periphery.
The original Block I tractor featured four different trailer types: The 15T, the 25T, the 40T and the 75T.
(2772): The "Block II" tractor design uses a 200 SFE and weighs only 20 tons; a new series of trailers were created with it to make the most efficient use of Though it only has 4 tons of armor like the Block I, this is still sufficient to provide protection against an AC/20 from any angle (once). While less powerful and less armored than the Block III and IV, this version is affordable at only 404k C-Bills which ensures the legacy vehicle is still in heavy use well into the 32nd century.
The Block II tractor used enlarged versions of the Block I's: The 20T, the 30T, the 45T and the 80T. An essentially unarmored 5T trailer informally exists and is used by some customers, but Mercurio Corp doesn't actually offer these.
(2976): The "Block III" tractor upgrades to a stronger 240 XLE and maximum armor for a vehicle its size; this also saw a series of new trailer designs to make use of the stronger powerplant. The powerplant ended up being lighter and smaller than anticipated, leaving a small cargo area behind the seats sufficient for one ton. Intended for a lightened ECM suite that wasn't yet available at the time of the Block III's introduction, Mechani drivers often install a kitchenette with storage space, microwaves, refrigerator and freezer powered by the large fusion engine and an auxiliary battery supply.
Mechani tractor crew are highly protective of their unsanctioned amenities and dislike the loss of this storage space in favor of a hard-mounted ECM Suite to power the new stealth armor on the Block IV and frequently fight tooth-and-nail to stop from having to upgrade from their Block IIIs, to the point that some servicemen have been caught sabotaging incoming Block IVs for an excuse to bring out their old trucks.
A new set of trailers were introduced to take advantage of the new powerplant, including a 10T, 20T, 28T, 40T, 60T, and 100T sizes.
(3130): The cutting-edge Block V uses an 300 XXLE, the most powerful powerplant thus far. Though it costs 1 ton of armor compared to the Block IV, the new module promises swifter and better-optimized logistical capabilities. The manufacturer is confident that they can cut the current eye-watering per-unit cost of 10 million C-bills down to a quarter of the price as their engine supplier learns how to optimize production for their new engines- given sufficiently large order volumes, of course.
Yet another, even larger set of trailers was released for the Block V: a 5T, a 10T, an 18T, a 30T, a 40T, a 55T, and an 80T have all been confirmed. The 5T is based on customer-produced unofficial trailers and is notable for being essentially unarmored; only a half ton to provide limited protection from rough handling.
There's industry rumors that Mecurio Corp's trailer partner, Taneli Industries, has also designed a special "superheavy" 130T trailer for exclusive use in the Vela Corridor that uses endo-steel to manage the weight. This would be the first time that one of Mercurio Corp's trailers featured endo-steel in the design, though not the first time an endo-steel chassis has been used in vehicles.

Tractor Subvariants
Amphibious: Available for all Blocks, removes a ton of armor for limited amphibious equipment. When used with similarly-equipped trailers, allows the system to slowly sputter along past rivers.
Amphibious Plus: Available for the Block III onwards, removes two tons of armor for greatly improved amphibious abilities. A tractor unburdened by trailer units can even exceed water speeds of most commonly-available riverine vessels such as Mauna Keas and Monitors.
Alternative Armor: Instead of the Stealth armor system on the Block IV and above, or standard armor on the Block III and below, specialty armor types such as reactive, ferro-lamellor and ferro-fibrous are available on request.
Sealed: Available for the Block III onwards, features environmental sealing for operation in hostile environments.
Drone: An upgrade for the Block III onwards, installs a Smart Robotic Control System for 1 ton of cargo space or armor. Only available to the Vela Corridor, and currently only used by the Republic of Crossroad.

Trailer Variants (General)
Many trailer modifications are compatible with each other. Combined with the normal Omni capabilities, the number of possible Trailer configurations are interminable.

Amphibious: Installs limited amphibious equipment into the trailer, allowing it to swim with an Amphibious tractor. Some armor on the trailer is removed to make room for the equipment, keeping the same payload.
Amphibious Plus: Available since the Block III Tractor, installs a more powerful version of amphibious equipment. Much less common than the standard modification, and only available to some of the light trailer variants.
Sealed: Available since the Block III Tractor, features environmental sealing for operation in hostile environments.
Alternative Armor: Refits to the standard trailer armor are available upon request, such as reactive, ferro-fibrous or ferro-lamellor.
Alternative Armor (Stealth): A specific refit that requires the installation of a small 10 SFE generator and ECM unit in addition to the stealth armor, this armor refit is theoretically available but is not recommended by the manufacturer because it reduces the trailer's armor by a whole 2 tons and having the trailer be difficult to lock on to may encourage enemies to simply target the more expensive Tractor unit instead.
CASE: Hard-mounts Clan-spec CASE to the trailer. While unnecessary for Vela Corridor customers (and later Clan ones) which can easily place CASE on systems when transporting ammunition, Inner Sphere customers that lack the advanced CASE system appreciate the survivability benefits.
Sponson:For customers interested in defending their tractor-trailer systems kinetically, trailers can be installed with a Sponson turret of specified weight. This allows the customer to create trailer omni-configurations with improved self-defense capabilities without heavily impacting its payload capacity (though the Sponsons still weigh a little bit, even when unloaded).
Turret:Installs a full-sized turret with a customer-specified carrying capacity and reconfigures the armor arrangement from the other sides of the trailer to cover the turret. Not recommended by the manufacturer because spreading the armor to a fifth location may unacceptably weaken the trailer.
Independent Operation Modification: Installs the required control systems and a 10 SFE generator to power subsystems, enabling the trailers to operate equipment even when decoupled from a Tractor. The weight required comes out of the payload and can make some important omni-configurations fundamentally inoperable, as such IOM trailers generally need their own special catalogue for omni-configurations.
Drone: Smart Robotics Control System. Only available in the Vela Corridor.

The 10T trailer has a small cargo load, both in absolute terms and as a percentage of the trailer's weight. It's consequentially less common than the larger trailers, especially the 20T, the 28T, and the 40T varieties, but the light payload can still be suitable in certain applications such as electronic warfare.

The 28T trailer is the most popular size for good reason: When combined with the Mechani Standard Tractor Block III+ it has the best blend of speed and payload, and has the additional benefit that it and its tractor can fit comfortably in a Dropship's light vehicle bay. The artillery support configurations have plenty of ammunition for the crews to experiment with special ammunition, and the high capacity of the MASH configuration serves it well with infantry groups. Most notable is the Repair Base configuration which features a repair platform that provides maintenance infrastructure that could otherwise only be found in Dropship bays themselves. As one of the lightest (and cheapest) methods to get mobile field bases on the fields, this configuration is actively sought out by nearly every faction in known space, and is frequently purchased with the IOM trailer mod to enable the trailer to operate while unplugged from its trailer.

Not as common as the 20T and 28T trailers, the 40T remains the third most common trailer design, in part because it's better armored than the lighter trailers while still having acceptable speed for most roles. The vehicle can technically be placed in a light vehicle bay for quick deployment, but a tractor on the ground has to roll up the deployment doors and attach it after landing; the tractor will not fit in the same bay as the 40T.

Some Mechani and Crossroadian trailers have been spotted with an advanced Ground-Mobile HPG mounted to them for interstellar communication while in the field.

Considered more practical than the other large trailer because the tractor-trailer combination can fit handily in a heavy vehicle bay, the Mechani Standard Tractor visibly struggles to haul such large trailers. Despite this, the heavy tube artillery piece variant is still faster than the Mobile Long Tom and even sports a slightly larger ammo bay, making the 60T very attractive to Inner Sphere customers.

Despite technically having the best freight efficiency, the 100T is fairly uncommon and impractical, with only the Mechani Alliance and the Lyran Commonwealth being frequent users of the type. Technically deployable via large vehicle bays, the Mechani Standard Tractor has to run up the doors from the ground and hook it up similar to the 40T trailer, and the tractor-trailer speed is glacial when attached. Both the Mechani Alliance and the Lyran Commonwealth field the Lance Repair Base variant, deploying them from Charon shuttles with heavy vehicle bays to quickly give FOBs or MOBs high repair thoroughput in regions where they can defend them from artillery fire or airstrikes. The Lyrans have pioneered a so-called "Rotary Thumper", a gargantuan sixty-ton weapon system that can put out as much lead as an entire battery of conventional Thumper vehicles.

One unique attribute that the Mercurio Corporation was not initially privy to was that the 100T trailer had just enough payload to mount a small cruise missile. Unfortunately, it was the Word of Blake that was the first to discover this, and they promptly began modifying captured MSTTs with 100T trailers to field Cruise Missile launchers with exotic payloads, not just nuclear-tipped ones but ostensibly conventional warheads that were instead "spiked" with extremely deadly biological or chemical ordnance. However, the cruise missiles could be shot down with a diligent air defense network, and the large and slow trailers were easily tracked which aided in their capture or destruction.
