What do you guys think is the best Inner Sphere battlemech for doing science in?
Think Star Trek but in Battletech and the away team is in mechs, what would Spock's battlemech be?

Something light and mobile with a Beagle or Bloodhound Active Probe.

Hmm, after looking at the Master Unit List for mechs with the Bloodhound Active Probe, I like the Firestarter, Ostscout, and the Raven.
Minis for the Firestarter and Ostscout will theoretically be released this year, I already have a spare Raven though. I might go that route.
There are clearly some wider options for just the Beagle Active Probe, such as the Commando, Mongoose, Jenner, Cicada, and Shadow Hawk. I also have a Commando and Jenner mini already available.
I've been leaning toward the Raven, but one with arms like the Mongoose might make more sense.

Okay, based on the Beagle and Bloodhound Active Probes and a weight less than 50 tons I've more-or-less narrowed it down to these: Firestarter FS9-OX Commando COM-7Z2 Mongoose MON-66 Mercury MCY-97 Hussar HSR-200-Db Raven RVN-3L
I have minis available for the Commando, Mercury, Hussar, and Raven. A Mongoose could be got and CGL will supposedly release minis for the Firestarter later this year.
What do ya'll think?

Welp, looks like the winner for my "science mech" is going to be the Ostscout.
2nd place to the Mongoose and 3rd, a tie between the Hussar and the Bloodhound. Runner-up, the Raven, because it didn't have arms to collect samples.

I would go with a unit with hands. The probe is good, but not the end all for science. It does have limitations.
I would also suggest making some custom mods for the unit, if you are truly making a science unit. Swapping out a weapon or two, would gain you some weight to add in something like a drill, as well as a mobile lab set up. Yes, you can just carry the lab, it will slow the mech down with the 'extra' weight. A flamer may well be needed to clear out overgrowth, if the target is fireproof, such as a ruin. It will also help scare away animals that are hostile, but do not need to be destroyed.
I would also suggest something with jump jets, as you may need to get up hills too steep for a mech to climb. It will also allow you to deploy it harsh terrain from a dropship. Doubt a LAM would be used, as they are too rare and valuable.
If you want to go far with this, a quad, with equipment added to it might be a way to go. It will provide a more stable platform to do a lot of work. It can provide some cover for things like rain and snowfall directly under the unit.

I always favored the proto-omni Mercury. Bonus: two hands, which makes it useful in non-combat engineering applications. Mongoose is another excellent choice for the same reason.

For those reasons I am thinking of using the Ostscout, hands, fancy sensors, jump jets only one medium laser, could add that flamer and/or other things though, it doesn't have to be quite that fast after all.
Though now you've got me thinking, I can 3D print one of those HQ vehicles and then make a custom sheet to turn the HQ into a mobile lab-truck using Megamek. Then they could operate as a team!

I actually added the Mercury to my Word of Blake force and my yet-to-be-painted Amaris Empire Remnant force. Probobly gonna have to go with a Rim Worlds Republic paint scheme as I can't find any scheme specific to the Amaris Empire.
The Mongoose was my most favored for the role until someone on Discord pointed out the Ostscout, I still kinda wanna add one to one of my forces.

The MASH unit vehicle is another potential unit for field work.
Depending on the type, it can be expanded to give the operators more room and still be enclosed and sanitary.
Granted, if you are looking for a mech, or highly mobile unit to allow faster deployment/retreat, then most land vehicles are not going to be a good thing.
But remember. The newer rules allow cargo compartments in mechs, so that might be a way to get your mobile science lab without having to do too much home modifications.

I'm gonna have to look up these cargo rules.
But for now, I am already printing a MASH truck I found on Cults3D.
I'm also printing a Tarantula for for a different scientist (a "mad" one)
