Hey all,
I've been designing some characters and was wondering if there was a book or other collection of clothing styles and/or personal weapons (like sidearms).

Anyone know of one?

Mercenaries handbook would have generic weapons and clothing. The old one anyways. I haven't seen anything newere then the initial clan invasion books. This would be for basic costs.

A lot of the art in the rule books might give you several examples.
To be honest almost any 'futuristic' art would have ideas in them. From the dustbowl mining worlds to the high society gatherings would fit in the canon game.
As cyborgs do exist, replacing body parts with things would work. Most cyborgs aren't the android style. Just having prostetics (sp?), such as robot arms or legs. Justin Allard's hand replacement is a good example of that.

The concept of the mechwarrior cockpit uniform is a prime example of the range of what people might wear, and can be expanded to everyone else. Having a spiked outfit wouldn't be normal for a high society diner, it would not be out of place in the streets below it.

A pearl handled pistol would not be out of place. Granted an antimatter pistol would probably not exist.
I would also suggest any gold plated slug thrower be limited to a non functional status. Gold melts at a relatively low temperature, so likely to melt fast as part of a barrel.

Hope this helps.

I figured something like that might be the case, I mostly wanted my Davion, Steiner, and Kurita characters to look right and maybe give them the appropriate laser pistol/other sidearms and such.

I've heard stuff like high class Davions favor those shoulder half-capes and I've got a directory full of classic art JPGs that I've come across. It seems like the information is spread out in little tid-bits across the old FASA books, it kinda feels like BT is big enough to have and encyclopedia for this stuff now like Star Wars.

It does kind of right here in the wiki on Sarna, the trick is navigating it.

The original House Books had the color pictures with examples you want for the most part, and the text with other examples. The Mechwarriror RPG books 1 and 2, had more things as far clothing went, limited pictures though, but the templates in MW2 had some good ideas how the characters would dress.

A lot of times it's up to you to just well dress them. Fashion is fashion and as long it's not to crazy no one should be to concerned over it. A jumpsuit is a jumpsuit regardless of who made it.

Well, I've seen some of the old art, a DC character can basically just be a hybrid of samurai and WW2 era Japan, I was planning on some Davion characters in some pretty generically Victorian uniforms with a half-cape on one shoulder, and some Steiner folks maybe dressed like officers from Warhammer's Imperium just not quite so exaggerated.

There you go, use those ideas, or mix and match. Fashion is not going to be set to anything. It's not really now, so by the time the game is set in, just about every planet is going to have its own take on the idea, as is each House, etc...with the upper ruling class setting some of the big trends.

Simple take, cargo pants, a basic shirt with some pockets, a field jacket or cargo-style flight jacket, and boots, and you are good to go on just about every planet in known space.

Armor could well be worn under some cloths as well. Advances in technology could very well have body armor thin enough to fit under normal suits.
Weapons could well be hidden like that as well. Granted a rocket launcher isn't likely, but a small 'hold out' pistol could be.
Depending on where in the world they are at, it is possible for someone to carry around a sniper rifle or some such and not get hassled for it. Same with armored helms and such. Someone known for being a mech pilot may well have a neural helm on at almost all times. Others could fake that.

As for Davion, a lot of the ministers and high society do tend to have capes. They even carry batons and such.
On worlds with poor air, would well have masks and such, so that could be useful.

Given 'advances' almost anything can be in fashion, with things going in and out of style. A backwater world could well have a 'new' fad being a decade or more out of date on the important worlds. Hairstyles and such are the same way.

One such thing is the LC and having mechwarriors shave the crown of their heads so the neural helm makes better contact. They are proud of that.

Okay, I think I can work with this, I finally looked up the "Infantry Weapons" section on Sarna so I can give characters sidearms that exist in canon too.

I haven't drawn in a while but I think I might bust out the old drawing pad and make a few sketches for at least my Davon characters. After all, if I ever make pilot cards or short stories I was always going to include some art anyway.

Any specific suggestions on preferred handguns and such?
