I was thinking about various mine dispensers that didn't put quite so much effort into firing the mines over hundreds of meters but rather more or less dropped them at the minelayer's feet. There's certainly a versatility to Thunder LRMs because of their range - you don't have to maneuver behind the enemy as often, and can deploy the minefields on a whim rather than with forethought. But, why leave all the fun to LRMs? There's a lot of other missile launchers just waiting to spew out minefields.

THUNDER SRMs
Thunder SRMs are (duh) SRMs that deploy minefields quite like Thunder LRMs. The only difference is that each SRM deploys a 2pt minefield (so SRM launchers will deploy 4, 8, and 12pt minefields) and the Thunder SRMs have the range of SRMs, not LRMs. Per ton of ammo and launcher, you get bigger minefields. Cost multiplier is the same as Thunder LRMs (x2?).

HEAVY THUNDER SRMs
These are variant Thunder SRMs that cut down the rocket motor of SRMs for more warhead space. Each Heavy Thunder SRM deploys a 3pt minefield, but has the range of a machine gun (1/2/3). The motors of Heavy Thunder SRMs are so short-lived they basically turn the SRM launcher into a low-powered mortar. Cost is the same as normal Thunder SRMs.

Suggested application:
VTOLs, scout mechs, hover craft.

Questions:
1) I ferget cuz I rarely use Thunder LRMs. Do they only detonate against hostile units or do they attack friend and foe alike?
2) Are Thunder LRMs automatically on when they're deployed, or can they be activated at selected times?
3) I don't have my FM:CapCon handy. Do the Cappies have any improved versions of Thunder LRMs with the features described in question 1 and 2?

Sounds good... How about simply having Mining Mortars... or some other apparatis that simply drops mines out the back

I was thinking of that originally, but it's easier to invent and deploy new ammunition than it is to deploy a new weapon system, get it on some now-specialized vehicles/mechs, and keep them supplied with their unique ammo type.

So, I added it to SRMs. There are a lot of SRM launchers around, and they just got more useful.
