I invented this to resolve problems when trying to place 15 tons of weapons into 2 critical slots.

the external pod is basicly what sounds like. a pod to carry critical slots on th eexterior of the mech. the external pods wiegh 0.5 tonnes and provide 3 extra critical slots to that section. the bad part is that the shell for the pod is quite thin. everytime something hits that area roll 2D6. on a result of an 8 or better, all the contents of the pod are destroyed. if ammo happens to be present and the roll was 11 or 12 then the ammo explodes doing damage to armour first, then internal.
although an armoured variant exists which wieghts 1 ton and has 6 points of armour. rules above apply except that damage is done to the pod first and ammo explodes instantly.

the pod cannot contain the following:
-ferro, stealth, endo steel or null-signature crits
-more pods
-parts of weapons except for AC/20's
-cockpits, gyros, engines or actuators

It looks quite rational, a god balance of usefulness and increased risk. It looks to be most helpful on Inner Sphere mechs with an XL engine, heavy ferro-fibrous and endo steel, and the desire to mount a few guns with that saved tonnage.

Could it hold part of an Arrow IV, so that inner sphere quads would have a chance to carry one?

Looks good, a reasonable improvement on the hand-held weapon rules from MaxTech. Never did quite like those, though they have the point of being able to mount extra armor. They were annoying because they needed their own heat sinks, and couldn't use DHS (IIRC). These pods are better - I can see an RL/20 going into one of these quite easily.

Can they be ejected?

sure. but it ounts towards criting weapons etc. also we'll say it leaves a 1 point gap in the armour.
