------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ==Overview:== The Grunt was one of the most common mechs in the Rim Worlds Republic. It was an older design, inspired by the Hornet and Sentinel, which was being phased out of the Republican army.
The design acquired a poor reputation during the Amaris Civil War. As a result the design has become increasingly rare, except in less-developed areas of the Periphery and Bandit Kingdoms.
==Capabilities:== The Grunt was originally designed as a trooper mech. It was well armed for a mech its size as the Rim Worlds engineers were struggling to produce heavier mechs.
The armament was conventional, with twin large lasers, backed up by the reliable Countach III LRM10 rack and a medium laser for close defense. It mounted 8.5 tons of armour and 18 heat sinks.
The Grunt had a high stooped- shoulders silhouette and an ungainly walk, making it look clumsy, which no doubt added to its poor reputation. Pilots compained that the feet were undersized and that the mech had a tendency to sink into soft terrain.
As the Amaris forces overcame the Star League designers set about to improve the Grunt, replacing the heat sinks with 13 double strength ones, adding a small laser and an anti-missile system. The armour was increased to 11.5 tons
The Grunt was a capable trooper mech, with enough armour and weaponry to engage medium and heavy mechs, but the design's fatal flaw was its limited speed and lack of anti-infantry weaponry.
==Battle History:== Grunts were found in large numbers in Republic militia units. Although the design was fairly sound, the skill and ability of militia pilots couldn't match the fury of the SLDF veterans.
Observers noted that Grunts were slow and vulnerable to infantry attacks. As a result the SLDF used infantry in rapid transports combined with fast mechs and hovertanks to ambush Grunt units.
The heavy losses during the campaign was duly noted in the Inner Sphere and most houses that had purchased the Grunt relegated them to training units.
Only on a few occasions did Grunts fight effectively, often against heavy mechs, where their speed, armament and firepower were better matched.
==Variants:== Retooled Star League factories managed to produce a record amount of conversion kits for the Grunt in the hope of shoring up the Republic's defences against the SLDF invasion. But improved equipment did not match skill and training. Roughly 3/4th of all Grunts were refitted at great cost and effort.
After the War, the surviving mech were either scrapped or sold off to periphery states in need of mechs and mercenaries. Most were of the upgraded version.
As the technology declined, so did the Grunt. Not aided by a poor reputation, most fell into disuse after the ammo for the Anti-missile system became increasingly difficult to find.
Double Heat sinks began to malfunction and had to be replaced with ordinary heat sinks with poor performance. Lasers or machineguns replaced the anti-missile system in a machine prone to overheating.
==Deployment== Republic militia regiments deployed a battallion or more of these mechs as all the other, more capable mechs had been sent to fight against the Star League.
Most estimates put the number of surviving Grunts in known space at around 250 units. Most of these are to be found in the Periphery. A handful are in the hands of mercenaries and the odd house regular.
Several have been upgraded to their original configuration and some pilots have commented that it wasn't that bad after all. But most still consider it one of the worst designs ever.
