------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ==Overview:== The Zerstörer (Destroyer in Steiner German) was a parallel development to the Fafnir, based on a Thunder Hawk chassis.
Although the changes to the design were far less extensive than those made on the Atlas to produde the Fafnir, it was almost twice as expensive and failed to get the production contract, although some 40 mechs were built before it was cancelled.
==Capabilities:== The Zertstörer is a fearsome mech mounting three Gauss Rifles one of which is the new Heavy Gauss Rifle. It can cripple most mechs with a single volley.
The Thunder Hawk was the perfect chassis to mount such a powerful arsenal, but significant modifications had to be made to incorporate the HGR. The recoil of the weapon forced designers to rebuild the entire torso and reposition the various weapon systems to make it more stable. The changes were so extensive that it became a completely new design, making changes to many other systems. This mech boasts one of the most complicated ammo feed systems ever seen in a Battlemech, bringing ammo from the arm, torso and legs into the various Gauss Cannons and crossfeeding between the two Rifles to avoid battle damage and jams, rendering either of the two GR inoperable. The whole system is a miracle of engineering and so far no jams have been reported.
The only weaknesses of the Zerstörer ar its reliance on ammo-fed weapons and slow speed. With only two medium lasers for self-defence it is not suited for extended campaigns where ammo might be a liability. And with a top speed of 54 kph it is slow design suited for assault and breakthrough, but not for exploitation and running battles.
==Battle History:== Only a handful of Zerstörers fought in the Fed Com civil war but they were not involved in any major actions. Most were kept at the factory to boost the garrison.
