Sarna 2014 Survey Results

Hi everyone!

I want to thank everyone that took the Sarna 2014 Survey.  We had 941 responses, which has given us a ton of great feedback!  Besides the survey questions, there were several hundred written suggestions, ideas, bugs and thoughts on how to improve the site.

I’ve spent the last day pouring over the results, and have tried to boil everyone’s responses down to some key takeaways.  Over the new few months I’ll be addressing your biggest concerns and best suggestions.

You can check out the survey results here.

Sarna 2014 Survey

Hi everyone,

Please take a moment to help us improve Sarna.net by taking a survey:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/sarnanet2014

The survey asks 20 questions and should only take 5 minutes of your time. We will use it to help us better understand how we can improve the site.

All feedback is anonymous (unless you want to leave your name or email).

The poll will be open for two months. After this time, we will analyze and review the feedback so we can plan how to improve the site for 2015.

Thanks to everyone who participates!

BattleTechWiki 2013 Founder’s Awards Nominations

BattleTechWiki

Every year, Editors, Readers and Admins on the BattleTechWiki are called to nominate contributors’ names for the annual Founder’s Awards. These awards are given in recognition to the amazing individuals who made significant contributions to the wiki in 2013.

If you’ve visited the wiki in the last year and came across a great article, or had a helpful interaction with a member of the wiki community, I would encourage you to nominate them for the Founder’s Awards.  Last year’s awards winners can be found here.

Nominations end January 31, 2014.

Marauder part of the Russian October Revolution

5,700 12th-year students taking their history exam found a fun surprise when they opened their packets to an image depicting the Russian Revolution:

Storming the Winter palace on 25th October 1917 by Nikolai Kochergin... plus a Marauder

Storming the Winter palace on 25th October 1917 by Nikolai Kochergin… plus a Marauder

Marauder somehow mistakenly found its way into the Storming the Winter palace on 25th October 1917 by Nikolai Kochergin.

OR MAYBE THAT’S WHAT REALLY HAPPENED!?

Whoops.

Interview with Nickolas Smith, Owner of Virtual World Entertainment: BattleTech Pods!

I was first introduced to the BattleTech universe in 1994.  Twelve years old at the time, my family would often take vacations from our home in Grand Rapids (Michigan) to Chicago, only a three-hour drive away.  On one of these trips, we stumbled upon the BattleTech Center at Chicago’s North Pier.  I was instantly hooked and made my parents take me back to play in the pods every time we went to Chicago.  During one of the visits I noticed a BattleTech: Third Edition boxed set on the counter and asked a bit about it.  I had never played a tabletop miniatures game before, but I convinced my parents that I had enough allowance to buy it and spent the next few weeks playing against myself and anyone I could trick into playing with me.

Modern BattleTech Pod

Going on twenty years later, I still remember how excited I was the first time I played in a BattleTech pod.

For those of you that have never heard of or experience a pod, you’re missing out.  BattleTech pods are fully-enclosed cockpits with multiple screens, joysticks, and rudder.  You play in a heavily-modified version of MechWarrior 4 (called BattleTech: Firestorm) against a dozen others at the same location.  The fighting is intense and a whole lot of fun — you really feel like you’re in a ‘Mech once you step into the cockpit.  It’s an experience everyone should try.

What’s Up With BattleTech? GenCon 2013 Session

I was at GenCon this last week enjoying the insanity (you should really try to go at least once if you’ve never been), and was able to take notes during Catalyst’s “What’s Up With BattleTech?” seminar put on by Herb Beas, the BattleTech line developer.

whats up with battletech herb beas

Herb Beas of Catalyst Game Labs

The atmosphere for the session was rather casual.  Instead of just spilling all of the beans about what’s in store for the game over the next year, Herb would answer any question the audience asked. I took an audio recording (see below), and here are some of the highlights of the things Herb shared:

  • The upcoming reprint of the Introductory Box Set (estimated to be released Nov 29, 2013) will have higher quality miniatures in the box than before.  Herb had a sample of the ‘Mechs at the seminar, and they really are much-improved (with more detail) over the first print:
