The Twelfth Army Group was the Star League Defense Force Army Group formed to command the invasion of the Magistracy of Canopus during the Periphery Uprising[1]
History[edit]
In common with the other SLDF Army Groups, the Twelfth Army Group was commanded by a General-rank officer who answered only to the SLDF High Command and the First Lord of the Star League.[1] For the Twelfth, this was Admiral Joan Brandt. In 2765, four additional armies were deployed from the Star League Inner Sphere military regions they were based in to the Periphery to support the Nineteenth Army, which was under siege in the Concordat.[2] The Twelfth Army Group was formed to take overall command of all five armies operating in the Magistracy of Canopus[1] as Admiral Brandt launched a campaign that saw two armies secure the Canopian border systems, while two more armies pushed into the inner systems. While plans were underway to capture Canopus IV itself, news of the Amaris Coup led to Commanding General Aleksandr Kerensky halting operations against the Magistracy in mid-2767, before the plans could be put into effect.[2]
The Twelfth Army Group is not recorded as having taken an active part in Operation CHIEFTAIN;[3] at least three Army Groups were active during CHIEFTAIN but serving as training commands and not listed on the order of battle (the Sixteenth, Eighteenth and Twenty-third Army Groups)[1][3] and it is unclear whether the Twelfth was still active during the campaign to free the Terran Hegemony, or if it had been disbanded as an organization after the campaign against the Magistracy ended.
At its peak, the Twelfth Army Group numbered 95 divisions and 84 independent regiments—a total of 459 BattleMech regiments and 480 conventional regiments. During the course of the Periphery Uprising the losses taken by the Twelfth amounted to 35 divisions and 28 independent regiments, with 5 divisions and 3 regiments taking sufficient damage during the conflict to see them disbanded, for a total of 419 regiments. Roughly 20 regiments of SLDF troops from the Seventeenth Army defected to the Periphery rebels during the Uprising.[2]
