History[edit]

Star League Era[edit]

During the Star League era the Thirty-ninth Avalon Hussars shared more in common with two of its sister regiments, the Eleventh and Twelfth Avalon Hussars than with the other units of the Avalon Hussars brigade, as it was also patterned more in the style of the light horse regiments deployed by the Star League Defense Force than a hussars regiment. The Thirty-ninth took the concept further than the Eleventh or Twelfth by not only being equipped with light BattleMechs but also having a battalion of jump infantry equipped with VTOL transports permanently attached to the regiment.[2]

Second Succession War[edit]

Having been stationed on the Federated Suns border with the Outworlds Alliance, the Thirty-ninth Avalon Hussars were in the process of being relocated to the Capellan March in preparation for Operation DAO when the Capellan Confederation Armed Forces launched Operation CELT, another attempt to capture Chesterton. The Thirty-ninth were retasked, joining the Bald Eagles regiment of the Screaming Eagles mercenary command in the relief of besieged Fourth Syrtis Fusiliers on Demeter. The arrival of the Thirty-ninth and the Bald Eagles in the Demeter system on the 30th of June 2828 and the news of the death of Chancellor Ilsa Liao on Orbisonia convinced the senior CCAF officer, Colonel Jiang Bao, to withdraw his forces. Having inflicted heavy damage on the Fusiliers, the Twenty-fifth Sian Dragoons and First Redfield Regulars withdrew, and First Prince Paul Davion would subsequently award Colonel Damien Hasek, the Commanding Officer of the Fusiliers, the dukedom of New Syrtis for his actions in defense of Demeter.[3]

Fourth Succession War[edit]

The Thirty-ninth moved to Lee to act as a reserve force but was not called on to engage the CCAF.[4]

War of 3039[edit]

The Thirty-ninth was based on Freedom, along with several other AFFS and LCAF units, as part of a group that would strike in later waves of the invasion. Those plans were aborted, however, and the Thirty-ninth would see no action in the War of 3039.[5]

Clan Invasion[edit]

Sortied from their homeworld of Newtown Square to make supply runs, The Thirty-ninth completed several missions to resistance forces on Bone-Norman, Somerset, and Black Earth. These efforts, though successful, cost the 39th about a third of its DropShips and two neigh-irreplaceable JumpShips.[1][6]

After the Clan Invasion, the 39th remained on their garrison world of Newtown Square on the Clan front, patrolling across the border while their infantry forces held the planet. The Lyran Succession from the Federated Commonwealth stranded the Thirty-ninth in an increasingly hostile nation, which Major General Bella Bragg attempted to parlay into making life difficult for her Lyran "superiors."[1]

Civil War[edit]

The Thirty-ninth declared for Victor Steiner-Davion but was unable to relocate to the Federated Suns, still on Newtown Square. Unknown to the Thirty-ninth, the Fourteenth Donegal Guards and Leutnant-General Adam Steiner awaited Victor in the system. After a "dawn assault" the Fourteenth was well known for,[7] the Thirty-ninth split into several smaller hunter teams and led them on a chase across the world. The Thirty-ninth regrouped and faced a quick destruction at the Lyran unit's offensive, but the timely arrival of the 244th Division allowed Victor Steiner-Davion and the Thirty-ninth to recover and ended up taking much of the Fourteenth Donegal prisoner. Victor stripped the Fourteenth of half of their transport assets and gave them to the Thirty-ninth, leaving the Lyrans in place on Newtown Square with enough transport to defend against the Clans, but not enough to continue the chase of Victor's force.[8][9] The Thirty-ninth used their new JumpShips to travel to Coventry, where they destroyed the First Coventry Jaegers[10] Shortly thereafter they left the Allied thrust linked up with the Sixth Crucis Lancers and took control of Alarion.[11] Once relieved by the Seventh Crucis Lancers they went to Tharkad to support Peter Steiner-Davion in the Lyran Alliance.[12] Though they did not take part in the final battle of Tharkad, they did remain in orbit as reserve troops.[13][14] They then returned to the Federated Suns and were stationed on Wernke.[15]

Jihad[edit]

The Blackwind Lancers destroyed the Thirty-ninth on Wernke with several thermonuclear strikes in 3069.[16]

Tactics[edit]

During the Star League era, all of the Avalon Hussars were required to focus on being both flexible and mobile, with every regiment required to be capable of deploying within eight hours, although many of the Hussars struggled to actually achieve this.[19]

After the Clan Invasion, a common Thirty-ninth tactic was for the fast scout units go out and search for the enemy formation. Once detected, a series of raids sowed chaos and gave the main force enough time to gather for the final assault.[1]
