History[edit]

Reunification War[edit]

One of the Rim Worlds Army units aligned with the Rim Provisional Government during the Rim Worlds Republic civil war that began in 2575, the Third Amaris Legionnaires spent much of the next decade on the world of Stirling in the Republic's Timbuktu Province.[1][2]

The Star League eventually intervened in the civil war in support of Gregory Amaris, and assembled Task Force MAILED FIST to help secure Amaris' control over the Rim Worlds Republic. A multinational force headed by the Star League Defense Force, Task Force MAILED FIST was responsible for executing Operation MAILED FIST, the name given to the military intervention. After a destructive raid on Alarion prompted the SLDF to alter its initial strategy for the campaign, the focus shifted to reducing Rim Worlds Army concentrations throughout the Republic and responsibility for formations such as the Third Legionnaires within the Timbuktu province was given to Battle Group Timbuktu, a grouping of SLDF and Free Worlds League Military units under the overall command of Duke Narinder Selaj.[3]

Duke Selaj deployed a force from the Second Marik Auxiliary Corps to secure Stirling and the Third Legionnaires; based around two regiments of the Marik Militia - the Second and Sixth respectively - and the First Brigade of the Fusiliers of Oriente, the Marik Forces landed on Stirling in 2583,[4] defeating the outnumbered Third Legionnaires[2] and securing control of the world.[4]

Revival[edit]

In the wake of Regent Tadeo Amaris' military buildup of 2650, in which in a mere three months the Rim Worlds Army added enough BattleMechs and support units to field approximately seven additional regiments,[5] President Selanta Amaris reestablished the Third Amaris Legionnaires on Apollo as a demonstration regiment to increase the interstellar reputation of the Republic's MechWarriors. The Third was staffed solely from the top ten percent of graduates from the Apollo Military Academy and in the following years they continually sparred against the best brigades in the Rim Worlds Army, as they were also meant to serve as a frontline command.[6]

Around 2655 (see Notes), the Third's Alpha Battalion was on Vulture's Nest performing feats of marksmanship for recruitment purposes when a bomb detonated in the gathered crowd, followed immediately by an attack by armored elements later traced back to anti-Amaris rebels left over from the Reunification War. Under fire and enraged by the civilian deaths, the Legionnaire 'Mechs quickly formed rank and engaged the enemy. Even as they fought inside the heavily populated capital city, the Third's extraordinary marksmanship and accuracy minimized further civilian casualties, with their battlecam footage showcasing their professionalism all across the Republic for decades.[6]

Amaris Civil War[edit]

The Third Amaris Legionnaires would not take part in Stefan Amaris' Operation APOTHEOSIS, remaining within the Rim Worlds Republic as part of the defending Rim Worlds Army under Regent Mohammed Selim, among the dozen line regiments and around forty militia units that would face off against and ultimately be defeated by the two and half thousand SLDF regiments sent by Commanding General Aleksandr Kerensky to occupy the Republic.[7]

Notes[edit]

  • It's worded in Era Report: 2750 that Selanta Amaris "formed" the Third Amaris Legionnaires during her cousin's military buildup. Since we know from Historical: Reunification War that the regiment previously existed and was destroyed on Sterling in 2583, we can assume this is errata and was intended to be "reactivated" or "reestablished."
  • Era Report: 2750 also gives the year of the Vulture's Nest bombing as 2635, which is problematic for several reasons. The only date we have for Selanta Amaris' birth is from The Periphery which describes her as being a baby in 2622 (page 47) and that a council ruled in her place until she reached her majority, so she would would have been too young to order the Third be reestablished. Furthermore, as the Republic's military buildup didn't start before Tadeo Amaris became regent in 2649, this makes the Vulture's Nest encounter about fifteen years too early.
