The Sixth Hesperus Guards began as the Sixth Tamar Marines, an Age of War era command in the regional brigade associated with the Tamar Pact region of the Lyran Commonwealth, prior to being reorganized into the Hesperus Guards in the mid-twenty-eighth century.[1]

History[edit]

Age of War[edit]

The Sixth Tamar Marines fought as a part of the Tamar Marines brigade during the Age of War, and survived the Age of War, the drawdown in military forces that accompanied the formation of the Star League in which large numbers of military units belonging to the Great Houses were donated to the newly-formed Star League Defense Force, and the Reunification War. The Sixth Tamar Marines were the first regiment of the Tamar Marines to receive BattleMechs, and served as a skilled cadre command for the Marines, training inexperienced soldiers before they were redeployed to other regiments.[1]

Star League Era[edit]

Following an administrative error that saw the only other still-active regiment of the Tamar Marines, the Ninth Tamar Marines, renamed as the Ninth Hesperus Guards during a brief garrison assignment on Hesperus II in or around 2755, the Sixth Tamar Marines found itself caught up in a political argument within the Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces that saw the Sixth and the Ninth permanently renamed and reassigned to a newly-formed Hesperus Guards brigade. Also incorporated into the brigade was the oldest regiment in the LCAF, the Second Freedom People's Defense Regiment (as the Fourth Hesperus Guards), and together the three regiments were charged with defending a particular region of space - a small group of worlds clustered close to the Hesperus system, one of the most important manufacturing sites in the Lyran Commonwealth.[1]

Unlike its sister regiment, the Sixth took the reorganization largely in its stride, and continued to serve as a cadre command; located on Canonbie in 2765, the Sixth continued to train personnel as it had done while serving as the Tamar Marines training regiment. The Sixth's training system was somewhat unusual, in that it assigned green MechWarriors to lances in ones or twos, serving alongside veteran personnel, rather than operating a system of veteran and green lances serving alongside each other. This training regimen caught many of the Sixth's opponents by surprise, as they expected the Sixth to field more green units, rather than mixing seasoned veterans in with less experienced personnel. The quality of the Sixth's personnel was such that while the command was officially considered a veteran regiment by the LCAF, if it wasn't for the regular reassignment of personnel from the Sixth to other regiments the Sixth would likely have been considered an elite command.[1]

Tactics[edit]

The Sixth Hesperus Guards operated a training scheme in which the individual lances contained two or three experienced veterans alongside one or two green pilots; this meant that an enemy force attacking the Sixth was often surprised to find itself facing a mix of hardened veterans and green personnel within the same lance.[1]
