The Eighth Alshain Regulars were formed at the end of the Ronin War, alongside the creation of the Alshain Military District.[7]

History[edit]

War of 3039[edit]

In July 3039 the Eighth Alshain Regulars and the Eleventh Legion of Vega landed on Alrakis, a system that had been taken by the LCAF earlier in the year. They timed their assault to a local festival that had the local LCAF troops drunk, and Draconis Combine sympathizers in the militia disrupted the LCAF's response. This allowed the DCMS troops to land unopposed.[8] They fought against the Twenty-third Arcturan Guards, who left the world on August 13.[9]

Clan Invasion[edit]

As of 3050, the Regulars were stationed on Buckminster.[10] By the autumn of 3051, the unit had been moved to garrison Thessalonika in order to meet the threat of the Clan Invasion. They remained on the planet when Clan Ghost Bear suddenly resumed Operation REVIVAL in November 3051. On the ground was the Twelfth Sun Zhang Academy Cadre present for a training exercise. Despite being ordered to abandon their posts, the Twelfth refused and were instead added to the defenders. Khan Bjorn Jorgensson personally led the attack though received no answer to his batchall. Khan Jorgensson used information provided by ComStar to launch the Sixty-eighth Striker Cluster against what he thought was the Alshain Regulars. Surprised to find their opponents meeting them in open combat rather than cowering behind cover, the Clan warriors eagerly charged forward to close the gap while the Kuritan forces returned fire and gradually pulled back. The battle was going almost too well for the Ghost Bear warriors, and just as they began to suspect a trap, Star Colonel Chou Vong detected additional forces approaching from the rear. Immediately, the Ghost Bears noticed these new forces were acting with a surprising amount of skill and professionalism, and the truth was revealed: the cadets had been used to draw the Clanners into a trap set by the Regulars. Khan Jorgensson immediately ordered the Seventy-third Battle Cluster to attack, but when the Sixty-eighth protested at having to share glory the Regulars took advantage of the distraction to deliver a staggering blow. Scouts had located the Sixty-eighth's DropShips and, using the First Battalion to pin them down, the rest of the regiment proceeded to launch an all-out attack which crippled the transports. Only one Clan DropShip managed to lift off in time, but was so damaged it crashed before reaching safety.[11]

The Seventy-third responded by crushing the cadet force, leaving the Eighth Alshain as the only Combine unit left in the field. Joined by armor and infantry units from the local planetary militia, the Regulars proceeded to harass the Clan units in a continuous delaying action, leading Khan Jorgensson to suspect they had called in reinforcements. To counteract this he called down the rest of Delta Galaxy to secure the planet immediately. While they quickly overwhelmed the conventional regiments sent to face them, the Regulars remained elusive, launching stinging raids while Kuritan aerospace fighters denied the Ghost Bears air superiority for an entire week. Eventually, the cause for the Kuritan force's effectiveness in avoiding destruction was revealed: an intercepted transmission from one of the planet's moons traced back to a small research station, which was using its powerful telescopes to track Clan movements and relay this information to the Combine soldiers below. A detachment of Elementals quickly seized the station and deactivated its transmitters; denied its invaluable intelligence the Alshain Regulars were finally cornered and defeated.[12] Roughly two-thirds of the unit was able to get off Thessalonika, along with some elements from the Twelfth.[2]

Operation BULLDOG[edit]

Following the Truce of Tukayyid, the unit was one of two remaining regiments of the Alshain Regulars; they were renamed the Eighth Alshain Avengers[2] and were stationed on Pilkhua in early 3059.[13]

The unit was part of a task force that liberated Yamarovka. The allied regiments (First Davion Guards and Second Kell Hounds) fought alongside the Eighth Avengers against the Jaguar's Eleventh Garrison Cluster.

Dominion War[edit]

In 3062, the unit participated in an unauthorized strike on Alshain, triggering the Combine-Ghost Bear War. Survivors of the conflict with the Ghost Bears were executed, and the unit was removed from the DCMS rosters.[3][4] In 3085, the unit's history was used as a warning to dissuade commanders from starting fights on the Combine's border with the Ghost Bear Dominion.[14][15]

Tactics[edit]

The Eighth learned quickly that the Clans could be hurt through protracted battles. Since Thessalonika, they spent their time honing their tactics to exploit this weakness.[2]

They used their air forces for scouting missions and every convoy was escorted for self-defense.

The unit includes two VTOL companies, two artillery companies, and a battle armor company. The battle armor troopers had only a regular rating, with a reliable loyalty.

Color Scheme and Insignia[edit]

The units of the Alshain Regulars were known to use white, various greys, and a vibrant jade green. There is no official pattern and pilots are allowed to customize in camo and colored paneling schemes. Murals or other personal flourishes are observed.[18][19]

The Alshain Avengers discarded the Alshain Regulars' color scheme and regimental insignia and did not use camouflage, wanting their hated Clan enemies to know who they were facing. The new Avenger brigade insignia was that of a red dagger pointing out of an eclipsed sun with a flaming corona. This insignia appeared on the upper right arm of BattleMechs and was prominently displayed on all other vehicles. The Eighth Alshain Avengers painted their ‘Mechs and aerospace fighters white or gray with burnt-orange accents.[18][20]

The regimental insignia was a planet surrounded by fire.[2]
