9th FedCom RCT
Unit Profile (as of 3060)
Nickname Unknown
Parent Formation Federated Commonwealth Corps
Formed Unknown

Formed in 3041 or early 3042, the Ninth Federated Commonwealth RCT was recruited from both the Lyran Commonwealth and Federated Suns in an attempt to build loyalty to the Federated Commonwealth as a whole. One of its first missions was to hunt down the pirate Paula Trevaline in the Periphery. In the assault on Tortuga Prime, capital of Tortuga Dominions, the unit lost nine hundred infantry, a battalion of Armor, a wing of Aerospace Fighters (including two DropShips), and two companies of BattleMechs, but were successful in their mission, easily crushing the local pirate bands and bringing "Lady Death" to New Syrtis for trial. In their wake they left behind a world bereft of any ruler which swiftly fell into anarchy.[1] [2] The unit was then posted to the world of Kimball II until at least 3050 or was occupying it at the time.[3]

Canon rumors relate that the unit found the Black Marauder on an airless asteroid in an uninhabited system one jump from Malagrotta before moving on to Agliana. The find reportedly precipitated a series of frightening and harmful events, until Colonel Jim Mullins ordered the 'Mech be stowed away in a secret location on Warren.

Clan Invasion[edit]

Main article: Battle of Twycross

The Ninth Federated Commonwealth RCT would take part in the Battle on Twycross in September 3050, where it came under attack from elements of the Jade Falcon Eyrie Cluster. Having trained for operations in fierce weather[4], the Ninth was ordered to move through the Diabolis (Twycross' heavy storms) and hit the Falcons in the flank while the 10th Lyran Guards and Kell Hounds pinned them in place.[5] The presence of the Falcon Guards altered the plan. Soon after the unit withdrew and would undergo rebuilding of some of its units.

The Ninth remained on Twycross with the Tenth Lyran Guards when Clan Steel Viper struck in November 3051. Intent on succeeding where the Falcons had failed, the Vipers' elite Gamma Galaxy undertook a series of risky combat drops under cover of the Diaboilis, catching the FedCom defenders by complete surprise who assumed the Vipers would favor clear weather that favored their superior long-range weapons. While the Tenth Lyran faced the 423rd and 428th Assault Clusters on the Plain of Curtains, the 94th Battle Cluster struck the Ninth in Schreuder Heights. Outmatched, the Ninth FedCom were driven back to the spaceport at Camora, force off-world within hours of the Steel Viper's landing.[6]

Truce of Tukayyid[edit]

After the Battle of Tukayyid, the Ninth Federated Commonwealth RCT was reassigned to the Sarna March of the Federated Commonwealth. The unit was ready to reinforce the 3rd Donegal Guards, who were at the time guarding the Tao MechWorks on Styk.[7]

The Ninth Federated Commonwealth RCT would remain within the Lyran half of the Federated Commonwealth until the secession of the Lyran Alliance. The unit was renamed by order of Katherine Steiner-Davion and became either the 1st or the 2nd Alliance Guard. The unit's loyalties seemed questionable and it became a repository for personnel of questionable loyalty. Within two years the unit was broken up and their equipment and the more loyal personnel were used to form the core of the new Alliance Jaegers.[8]

Composition History[edit]

9th F-C RCT (Regiment/Green/Reliable) [10]

  • CO: Hauptmann General Alvin Kimmel [10]
Note: At this point in time the command was stationed on Kimball II. [10]

The unit consisted of:

  • 9th FedCom Regiment
  • 9th FedCom Armor Brigade
  • 9th FedCom Infantry Brigade

The parade colors of the Ninth, when it was a member of the FedCom Corps, were navy blue with gold banding on the arms and legs of 'Mechs. Gold was also used to highlight panels on the upper torsos of 'Mechs and turrets of armor units, resulting in a checkerboard pattern. After being renamed, the color scheme was changed to a brown and tan paint scheme and replaces the black edging with green edging for the short time the unit was in service.
