A Race to the End is a short story by Loren L. Coleman that was first published online on BattleCorps in August 2004. It was later republished in print in the first BattleCorps anthology The Corps in 2008.

Teaser Text[edit]

In the Chaos March, victory is often in a close race for survival. Loren L. Coleman mixes and matches forces for a new unit. But before they ever made it to Outreach, first they survived Pandora's jungles on the world of Gan Singh.

Plot Summary[edit]

The seventh company of the Third Donegal Guards was accidentally left behind when House Steiner-affiliated Federated Commonwealth commands were withdrawn from the Chaos March. With six of them killed and four missing in action, only Leftenant Kelly Van Lou and company commander Hauptmann Roland Mills remain in a three-sided fight with local forces and the First FedCom RCT. Trying to find a DropShip to evacuate from Gan Singh, they encounter the Donegal Guards' Seeker-class DropShip Lamprey but realize at the last moment that the DropShip is trying to trap them. Van Lou and Mills subsequently team up with mercenaries they had been fighting before, to perhaps reach another DropShip together.
