History[edit]
The Apex Mining Syndicate all but outright owned the ore and gas-rich systems in an area of Federated Suns space that were a hotbed for extraction, mining, and industrial activity. They operated and ran not only the extraction facilities but also the cities and towns in which the company's employees lived, resulting in more of a serfdom than a democracy.[2]
Sometime in the last decade of the Third Succession War, the workers and residents living in the star systems controlled by the AMS had grown tired of the nonexistent pay, low rations, and poor working conditions. They knew that the only language companies like Apex understood was the almighty C-bill, and a group of the indentured employees hired Nik's Cavaliers to hit them in their pocketbook to get their attention. The mercenaries struck two critical installations on Allerton that sent them a message they couldn't ignore. Afterward, the syndicate immediately agreed to conduct ongoing negotiations with the miners, allowing the workers to take back some control over their lives.[1]
