BattleTechWiki is a free online encyclopedia dedicated to BattleTech. It aims to provide high-quality information but does not seek to cover all possible details. The editorial community determines content inclusion, adhering to the principle of things BattleTechWiki is not.
Key Principles[edit]
- Not a Paper Encyclopedia - BattleTechWiki leverages its digital format, allowing expansive topic coverage without the physical constraints of a traditional encyclopedia. However, articles must balance content with relevance and adhere to policies, particularly the five pillars. Articles should remain accessible by following BattleTechWiki:Article size guidelines, and lengthy topics should utilize BattleTechWiki:Summary style.
- Encyclopedic Content Only - BattleTechWiki includes content based on relevance, verifiability, and neutrality as it has to do with BattleTech. Articles must provide a summary of knowledge, avoiding excessive detail.
- Not a Promotion Platform - BattleTechWiki is not a venue for:
- Advocacy, propaganda, or recruitment.
- Personal or organizational self-promotion.
- Advertising, marketing, or product promotion. Articles must maintain neutrality and avoid bias or puffery.
- Not a dumping ground of information - Content such as external links and image collections should only supplement encyclopedic content.
- Not a Blog or Social Network - BattleTechWiki is not a space for personal blogs, memorials, or unrelated projects. User pages must focus on supporting collaboration within the encyclopedia's scope.
- Not a Manual or Guidebook - BattleTechWiki provides information, not instruction. Articles should avoid "how-to" guides, tutorials, recommendations, or tips.
- Not a Rulebook - BattleTechWiki is about the BattleTech universe first and foremost, not game rules. While rules play a major part in the universe and cannot be ignored, they are not the focus.
- Not Speculative - BattleTechWiki avoids speculation, predictions, or unverified future events. Only include content based on reliable sources.
- Not an Indiscriminate Collection - BattleTechWiki ensures it's about all things BattleTech and not really about anything else.
- Not Censored - Content may include material that some find objectionable, provided it adheres to policies and is relevant to the topic.
Community and Governance[edit]
- Not an Anarchy or Free-Speech Forum - Contributions must align with the encyclopedia's goals.
- Not a Democracy - Decisions are made by consensus, not voting.
- Not a Bureaucracy - Rules support content improvement, not strict adherence at the expense of quality.
- Not a Battleground - Discussions should remain civil, avoiding personal conflicts or ideological battles.
