Bankalachi Flat is a short story by Bryan Young that was published as introductory fiction for Hot Spots: Hinterlands.
Plot Summary[edit]
The Twenty-first Centauri Peregrine Lancers have signed a contract to defend the small mining settlement Aniki on Baker 3 against attacks from pirates or other potential threats. Due to further obligations, the Peregrine Lancers can only spare two BattleMechs, a Coyotl C piloted by Captain Rosin Douglas and a JM6-DG JagerMech from MechWarrior Ayush Malendra. Aniki consists of the settlement and a small DropPort both located on top of a massive rock column that can only be reached by a single road. The geographic location makes it easy to defend, with several anti-aircraft guns additionally at the ready.
On 3 February 3152, a DropShip of a pirate band called Shadowblacks descends near Aniki and deploys a lance of light 'Mechs augmented by a single aerospace fighter. The pirate unit consists of a Commando, a Jenner and two unspecified FrankenMechs under command of Captain Clara Shadows. After Shadows demands the Twenty-first to withdraw from Aniki and access to the settlement, a battle breaks out in which the Twenty-first Centauri Lancers can keep the enemy 'Mechs at bay, but cannot prevent the settlement from being repeatedly strafed by the aerospace fighter. This stalemate is only broken when an anti-aircraft gun is finally able to shoot down the enemy fighter. Having lost two 'Mechs and the aerospace fighter, the remaining Shadowblacks accept their defeat and retreat to the DropShip.
