Prelude[edit]
After four years of fighting, the "civil" war came to a close. Victor Steiner-Davion had crossed the Inner Sphere, starting at the Clan Jade Falcon Occupation Zone border, and threatened the capital of the Federated Suns where his sister, Katherine, had entrenched herself. Ardan Sortek had threatened New Avalon by way of the Capellan March, while Tancred Sandoval did likewise from the Draconis March. The nearby world of Galax was the major jump-off point for the Allies, picking up the Davion Heavy Guard that had been stranded there by the Archon, devoid of transport. The Second Davion Guards, First Crucis Lancers, and Third Crucis Lancers were joined by Duke Sandoval, who combined the First Lancers and a battalion of the Heavy Guard with his Second Robinson Rangers, arriving on New Avalon on 30 June, opening the battle for the world.[2]
Marshal of the Armies Jackson Davion had reinforced the world with the Nineteenth Arcturan Guards, Tenth Deneb Light Cavalry, Fifth Donegal Guards, Third Robinson Rangers, and the Remagen CMM, in addition to convincing the 299th Division of ComStar join the defenders. A battalion of the Seventeenth Avalon Hussars deserted their commander and joined the Loyalists in the defense.[2]
First Strike[edit]
A dozen Conquistador assault DropShips "liberated" on Galax spearheaded the attacks in the first Allied landings on New Avalon. The fleet of DropShips broke through the naval blockade, and the Second Rangers were able to link up with Allied sympathizers on Rostock. These rebels were able to disable the air traffic sensors and guide the Duke to a landing zone far from populated areas. The Third Robinson, titularly sworn to the Sandovals, nevertheless moved to intercept their Duke and the Second Robinson, but were stalled by the quick deployment of armored cavalry battalions and stopped thirty kilometers short of the landing zone.[4]
Marshal Mordecai Rand-Davion led his First Crucis and the Heavy Guards battalion to Brunswick, opposed by two brigades of conventional infantry and an combat vehicle brigade, but no BattleMechs. The necessary landing areas were quickly secured by the Allies.[4]
Arden Sortek landed a week later with his task force of the Second Ceti Hussars and the Davion Light Guards. His run of the naval gauntlet did not fare as well as Duke Sandoval's, and Sortek lost several DropShips. Two hundred kilometers from Sandoval's LZ, with several mechanized infantry and armored vehicle regiments, not to mention a Level III of the 299th Division between the two groups, the Allies were able to link up by 10 July. Sortek and Rand-Davion spent the next five weeks gaining control of the continent of Brunswick.[4]
[edit]
On 8 November, 3066, Victor Steiner-Davion arrived in the system, escorted by the Avalon-class FCS Melissa Davion and four Fox-class corvettes, the FCS Admiral Corinne Donnings, Kentares, Intrepid, and Robinson, Opposing them, the Avalons FCS Lucien Davion and Alexander Davion and the two Fox-class FCS Antrim and Murmansk, made this the largest Inner Sphere WarShip battle since the First Succession War[4] (the previous major engagement of the Antrim, the Battle of Trafalgar almost a decade earlier, included nine WarShips while a tenth was in reserve but was fought in the Deep Periphery).[5]
In less than an hour, three WarShips were destroyed (the Alexander Davion, Admiral Corinne Donnings, and Kentares),[6] the surrender of the Lucian and the only surviving Loyalist Fox Antrim after the Loyalist Murmansk jumped out of the system via a non-standard jump point.[4] The Murmansk was the likely target of the Pocket WarShip Overlord A3s that prevented a Loyalist Fox from joining the battle.[7]
Victor was able to then land on Brunswick with his task force of the Twenty-third Arcturan Guards, Sixth Crucis Lancers, Tenth Lyran Guards, First NAIS Cadre, Outland Legion, and a battalion of First St. Ives Lancers.[4]
