Overview[edit]

The Battle of New Canton was part of Operation GUERRERO, launched by the Capellan Confederation reinforced with mercenary units from the Free Worlds League.[3]

Preparations[edit]

The McCarron Armored Cavalry was sent to attack New Canton, and as they asked for more help, Thomas Marik sent the Twenty-First Centaury Lancers, as they were only a jump away. Both groups reached the planet the 2 November.[3]

The Attack[edit]

The 2 November, McCarron's and the Lancers descended on the planet. The first ones were the Lancers, which suffered all the brunt of the Grenadiers' aerospace wings. They hadn't their own aerospace protection force, and the McCarron's only sent two lone fighters to help them, so despite the fact than they didn't lose any DropShip, several were damaged.

Once on the ground, the Lancer's commander, Colonel Evelena Haskell, accused the overall commander, Marcus Baxter, for their damage, but he ignored her accusations. That deeply affected the Lancers; they were descendants of an old Capellan unit which defected, and didn't feel confortable working with them, fearing than they would want to punish them.[4]

The Kestrel Grenadiers were scattered through all the planet, so the attacking forces decided to assault the planetary capital, He Min, and take it. Once again, the lancers led the attack, but suffered a heavy pounding through the desert, heavily punished by the FedCom artillery. Meanwhile, the McCarron's were advancing south, but very slowly, and a furious Haskell called off the attack, retreating to their base, and forcing the McCarron's to follow them.[5]

Both Capellan commanders discussed on their base, each one blaming the others of the defeat. Baxter ordered the Lancers to attack again the next day. As many Lancers were talking about their fears and mistrust of the Capellans, Evelena called all the officers to a secret meeting.[6]

The next day, the Capellans resumed their assault: the Lancers through the city, while the McCarron's nearby the spaceport. Once again, the first ones had the hardest part, facing strong opposition of the Grenadiers at every street, advancing but at a high price. Using jump-jets 'Mechs as the Grasshopper, the 21st broke the FedCom lines, but the McCarron's were again very slow to advance. The Lancers' commander, tired of that mistreatment and being used as cannon fodder, announced the cancelation of their contract and ordered his people to cease fighting, as they've decided in the secret meeting. After contacting the enemy commander, the grenadier's Marshal Agatha Stromp, she explained her the new situation and warned her about the McCarron's intentions to take the spaceport. Stromp, reluctantly, left the Lancers to leave the city and the planet in peace, while she deplaced her forces to face Baxter's attack.[7]

Without reinforcements, the McCarron's eventually were forced to retreat, conceding defeat.[8]
