Planetary History[edit]
Age of War[edit]
Bella I had the misfortune of being one of the key targets of Captain-General Geralk Marik—also variously known as "Geralk the Bloodthirsty" and "The Bloodthirsty Giant"—who spent years on campaign against the Lyran Commonwealth, concentrating his efforts on securing Bella I and Alula Australis for the Free Worlds League.[4] Geralk's attacks began in in mid-2455, and were fought in complete defiance of the Ares Conventions; Geralk considered everyone on an enemy world to be a viable target, and made extensive use of massed artillery bombardments to allow his armored units to crush resistance. These brutal tactics saw him capture Bella I in early 2456, eleven months after the first League attacks.[5]
The Lyran Commonwealth was able to recapture Bella I and Alula Australis in 2468 through the use of BattleMechs, after Lyran 'Mechs had already ended Geralk's campaign by crushing him to death on Loric in 2459.[4]
Star League[edit]
While Bella I itself had little to recommend it as a major world, its location on the Lyran-League border enabled it to become a shipping hub for international traffic. Several spaceport cities arose during this time across the entire planet, and its jump point recharge stations were top-notch.[39]
First Succession War[edit]
Bella I was one of a number of Lyran Commonwealth border worlds to be struck by a devastating cross-border raids by the Free Worlds League between 2786 and 2790, as the Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces began to crack under the pressure of continuing efforts to annex the Bolan Thumb while also attempting to maintain a defensive posture against both the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery and the Free Worlds League Military.[40]
Bella I was briefly held by the Free Worlds League, from mid-2805 until a year later when it was reclaimed by the LCAF.[10][11] Over the next seven years it became a Steiner salient bordered by League-held worlds, until in April 2813 when the Regulan Hussars mounted a surprise attack on the planet. The League commander successfully bluffed the LCAF garrison into thinking his force was double its actual size, prompting them to make a retreat from the planet. Three years later, the humiliated Lyran units returned after receiving word that the Regulan Hussars were quitting Bella I due to a political dispute in the League. The newly-arrived FWLM garrison was pummeled into surrendering, but Lyran control of Bella I would only last for a year.[39]
In April 2817 the FWLM attacked Bella I again with three 'Mech regiments, this time intending to smash their opponents. With WarShips and large numbers of aerospace fighters present on both sides, the orbital battle was fierce and resulted in the loss of all ships present. Nonetheless, the League effected a landing and began a nine-month struggle of mobile warfare across the entire planet. Both sides were evenly matched in this style of fighting, and even the liberal use of tactical nuclear and incendiary ordnance by the Lyrans could not counter the League's aerospace superiority. By December Colonel Marcus Steiner was forced to withdraw his remaining forces, leaving behind nuclear traps for the victors.[39]
Now ruined, Bella I would play one final role in the First Succession War. In 2820 the world hosted diplomats from the Commonwealth and the League who met to discuss peace between their realms, resulting in the Bella Accords of 2823.[39]
Third Succession War[edit]
In 2942, a LCAF punitive raid against Bella I brought together Stingrays from both Successor States. The initial clashes in orbit proved inconclusive until House Steiner's heavy fighters brought their massive firepower to bear, driving the defending Stingrays into the atmosphere. LCAF landings followed, and the Stingray duels continued. Both sides fitted with ground attack weapons engaged in attack and counterattack against 'Mechs and supply areas. Eventually, the Steiner forces established air superiority and the raiding force departed with most of its objectives accomplished, with the Stingrays on both sides effectively canceling each other out.[17][41]
In 3003 a LCAF strike group of three Lucifers led a reprisal attack on Bella, but the units took massive internal damage to their craft from ammunition explosions and the raid was called off with most of the fighters involved ending scrapped for parts.[18][42]
The Jihad[edit]
Following the dissolution of the Free Worlds League in January 3079, elements within the Lyran Alliance moved to annex a number of former League worlds between August and September that year. Bella I was one of seven worlds conquered during this period, and the invasion only stopped when Archon Adam Steiner declared that any other bouts of what he termed "unauthorized adventurism" would be considered an act of treason.[29]

Geography[edit]
Bella I has large but shallow seas, four main continents and a moderate climate. The soil possesses enough fertility to support its population, but a lack of minerals precludes large-scale industrialization.[39]
