The Brighton system was home to at least one habitable world, Brighton IV, and as of 3145 was located in the St. Ives Commonality of the Capellan Confederation.[3][4]

System Description[edit]

Brighton is located near the Relevow and Taga systems[3][4] and consists of a class F9III primary orbited by at least four planets. During the thirty-first century a recharge station was in place at the zenith jump point.[1] The Brighton system was also home to the notorious prison moon known as Brazen Heart.[2]

System History[edit]

The Brighton system was colonized at some point during or shortly after the First Exodus from Terra and was a part of the St. Ives Mercantile League prior to the formation of the Capellan Confederation.[5]

Brighton IV, more commonly known simply as Brighton, is the fourth planet in the Brighton system[1] and has at least one moon, an arid satellite used as a prison for political prisoners and known colloquially as Brazen Heart.[2]

Planetary History[edit]

Brighton was originally settled by miners looking to exploit the copper and silver ores on the world. These miners later joined the St. Ives Mercantile Association, and later the Capellan Confederation. The Capellan industrial complex made good use of the refined ores from Brighton. Brighton's other claim to fame was that it is the site of the only official Capellan political prison.[1]

In 2998, the Brighton militia held off superior AFFS forces for several weeks, long enough for Warrior House reinforcements to arrive. Though this was successful, the population suffered.[1]

Brazen Heart[edit]

Brazen Heart is a satellite of Brighton.[2] Frequently described as a world with fierce deserts, it was primarily used as a prison colony, featuring several copper mines where prisoners work.[31] The local flora is edible, but provides no nutritional value. Many escaped prisoners have been found dead from starvation with stomachs full of local plants.[32]

Maximilian Liao was always worried that an uprising by the prisoners would take control of the moon. He ordered the creation of the Hong Lung Interdiction Station which was a space station designed to destroy any shuttles and DropShips that might carry escaping prisoners.[33]

Prior to the Fourth Succession War, the Capellan Confederation maintained Brazen Heart as a supposedly secret prison colony for political dissidents.[34] However, there was an active network of dissidents throughout the Confederation who were able to travel from and to Brazen Heart even then.[34] Hanya No Cha was born on Brazen Heart to a commoner's family. Following her secret marriage to Tormano Liao, Chancellor Maximilian Liao annulled her marriage to his son by decree.[35] Fearing that her life might be in jeopardy, Tormano had her secretly smuggled back to Brazen Heart in or just prior to 3021.[34] The world remained one of the established homes of the couple after the Fourth Succession War.[36]

When the St. Ives Commonality seceded from the Confederation to become the independent St. Ives Compact after the war, the Brazen Heart prison was closed. It was reopened when the Compact rejoined the Confederation three decades later.[32]
