System Description[edit]
Brinton is located near the Enkra and Umgard systems[4][3] and consists of a class F2V primary orbited by at least five worlds. During the thirty-first century a recharge station was in place at the zenith jump point.[2]
System History[edit]
The Brinton system was settled at some point during the Star League era after the end of the Reunification War.[5][6] Brinton was removed from maps during the Third Succession War[7][8][9] but remained an inhabited system until at least as late as the closing decades of the thirty-first century.[2]

Brinton V, more commonly known simply as Brinton, is the fourth planet in the Brinton system and has two moons named Onion and Turnip.[2] Brinton served as the administrative capital of the Brinton Union during the Star League era; one of four Unions that comprised the Taurian Concordat, the Brinton Union was the farthest anti-spinward of the four and consisted of eleven systems at its most populous.[3]
Planetary History[edit]
Brinton was the site of a conflict between the Taurian Concordat and the Capellan Confederation early in its history. The Capellans detonated a storage bunker of biological weapons that dated back to the Rim Rebellion and released a biological weapon on the planet in 3018 after a failed raid. That weapon was untested, highly lethal, and extremely adaptive biological virus which has thus far thwarted all efforts to contain it below the planetary level,[52] and even in 3079 it continued to kill humans. The output of factories was loaded onto DropShips by workers in full NBC gear, and once the DropShip had entered orbit, the cargo spaces were exposed to the vacuum of space to kill any infectious material that may have accidentally been loaded.[53]
Due to the epidemic, Brinton's factories went inactive from 3019 to 3023 as their facilities and attendant quarters were modified in an early effort to control the spread of the so-called Scourge Plague.[52]
The Scourge virus can be found in lethal quantities over 85% of the planet's air and water supply. It attacks the human nervous system, producing dementia and extreme paranoia. The virus is also known to cause severe brain damage and eventual death within 36 to 48 hours of the first signs of infection. Although in the decades since its introduction to the ecosystem, natives of Brinton have become resistant to the plague; tests conducted in the early 3020's confirmed that nearly four of every five citizens are carriers of the virus.[52]
In 3025, Brinton was home to some fifty-five thousand technicians and other specialists and was a major electronics manufacturing and production center for the Taurian Concordat. The industries on Brinton made the cool, temperate world a popular target for raids and attacks and it was sacked several times during the Succession Wars. The tempo of the attacks increased as the Third Succession War drew to a close, and the Taurian Defense Force maintained a standing garrison consisting of a battalion of militia infantry and two companies of BattleMechs to guard the planet. The Concordat also maintained a contingent of several large "WarShips" (an Avenger and two Leopard CV Dropships filled with aerospace fighters) in the system, guarding the various approaches and each jump point.[1][54]
The Concordat maintained strict quotas on the number of foreigners allowed on Brinton at any one time, a quota that even applied to ComStar; although Brinton had a Class C HPG on Brinton, only one hundred ComStar personnel were allowed on the planet at any one time. Anyone who violated the restrictions on visiting Brinton was treated as being either a saboteur or spy. Despite these restrictions the government of Brinton traded freely with a number of commercial concerns located outside the Concordat.[1]
Between 3030 and 3040 elements of the pirate band Calderon's Commando grounded 200 km away from the main factory complex after their DropShip suffered heavy damage from the planetary blockade. The Walla Walla was subsequently destroyed on the ground after its crew and passengers began exhibiting signs of the Scourge.[52]
Between 3067 and 3071 Brinton was raided by the mercenary-turned-pirate unit Dedrickson's Devils, who then moved on to attack the nearby world of Aea, spreading the deadly Brinton Plague to that world as well; as a result, the Devils' status with the MRBC changed to kill-on-sight, due to the urgent need to prevent the Plague spreading further, and a bounty of 100,000 C-bills was placed on the head of every member of the Devils.[55]
During the last days of the Second Star League, TDF doctors were working closely with bioweapons experts from the CCAF and noted neurologists from as far away as the Outworlds Alliance and the Magistracy as part of a Star League-funded project to find and create a cure to the Scourge Plague as part of a larger Star League initiated project to rehabilitate other worlds still plagued by Succession Wars era biowarfare stalled due to the dissolution of the Star League in 3067. Despite the loss of Star League support, some TDF sources promised to continue the research with the help of corporate funding until a cure is found.[52]
In contrast with the reports of only fifty-five thousand people living on Brinton in the 3020s, reports made in 3079 put the planetary population at close to twenty-three million people, and the local militia forces had increased from two BattleMech companies and a militia infantry battalion to an aerospace regiment and a regiment of well-trained infantry, including a company of battle armor infantry. Despite not being recorded on maps, Brinton remained famous for its computer industry.[2]
