The brutto vapore was a species of stinging insect living in the swamps of Alyina. These insects, found in cloud-like swarms, were greatly dangerous to humans: their stings carried a narcotic that would knock victims unconscious, at which point the insects would implant eggs. After two days, the eggs would hatch and leave their usually-unconscious host, a process almost always lethal. Under Clan Jade Falcon occupation, the swarms (and those animals that fed on them) were largely eliminated around major population centers, victims both of extensive insecticide use and industrial pollution.

Ion sparrows, native to Alyina, defended themselves from brutto vapore insects by releasing ion currents. With the introduction of the fire falcon by Clan Jade Falcon, brutto vapore became prey to the birds: ion sparrows would stun any insects that fire falcons lured into their flocks, leaving the brutto vapore ready to eat.
