Description[edit]
The Carrier-class fighter carrier can transport a complete Star of OmniFighters or aerospace fighters into battle. Designed and built by Clan Snow Raven to transport fighters to combat zones, the Carrier quickly became popular with pilots due to its good blend of speed, agility, firepower, and protection. It proved so successful that within 100 years of its introduction Carrier class ships were found in the toumans of every Clan. The Ravens built these ships in their primary factory at the Rumiko facility in exchange for a wide range of raw materials and manufactured goods, including those from the Inner Sphere.[2]
Clan military doctrine long considered DropShips as non-combatants. Increasing losses after DropShips were instead declared valid targets in particularly destructive battles necessitated the Carrier DropShip, and the Carrier's maneuverability and protection soon earned it the admiration of Clan naval crews.[2]
Each crew member and pilot get their own cabin in the nose of the ship, which warriors are normally free to decorate in any manner they choose. In many cases, a warrior assigned to a Carrier is billeted aboard that ship permanently.[2][6]
Armament[edit]
The Carrier's weapons mix is generous considering its primary role. The Gauss rifles, Ultra AC/20s, and Ultra AC/10s provide good hitting power against enemy DropShips, while the 16 large lasers (both extended range and pulse) ensure that when the ammunition is gone the Carrier will be able to defend itself.
Since a Carrier is likely to face opposing aerospace fighters during a mission, the Snow Ravens equipped it with multiple Streak SRM-6 launchers and medium lasers to provide close-in defense. To provide additional point defense, the Carrier used eight machine guns and six anti-missile systems to destroy incoming missiles, both standard and the massive WarShip-launched capital types.
Cargo[edit]
The large hanger bays on each side of the vessel are well-armored and have separate launch and recovery systems in case of damage from a failed launch or recovery. Each area is also separated from storage and maintenance facilities by massive airlocks to prevent any issues from affecting the entire craft.[2]
The Carrier class can carry over 700 tons of cargo, making it well equipped to handle the needs of ten OmniFighters and their pilots. This cargo capacity, and the fact that the ship carries enough Techs needed to support the warriors, allows the Carrier to participate in extended patrols, long-range reconnaissance, or deep strike missions. As a result, these vessels were frequently seen as part of the various convoys that ran between the Clan Homeworlds and the Inner Sphere during the days of the Clan Invasion.
