Category talk:Galatean Defense Force

This is my first try on actually putting together units that are really part of a group. I've chosen an easy one... I feel all sub-units should be grouped by parent unit (like wolf dragoons) but keeping independent page per unit).--Pserratv (talk) 17:55, 29 December 2017 (EST)

I am not for this, it will spawn hundreds of categories. This category can and should be folded into the wider Merc commands one. I feel the same about the WD one too but they are the poster boys so get special treatment sadly.--Dmon (talk) 10:06, 30 December 2017 (EST)

We have a lot of categories on Sarna that don't make much sense to me. I can see how Pserratv might want to have a category for named units that were part of the Galatean Defense Force, and I don't think it's a problem. Of course, there need to be proper articles on the Galatean Defense Force as a faction of sorts, and on the individual units. The Category cannot replace any of those articles, and arguably the Galatean Defense Force article could cover the list and make the Category redundant.

About the general concept though, I too think that it would create an unhelpful mess. Taking Wolf's Dragoons as an example, they have only one notable sub-unit that probably hires out independently and definitely warrants its own article (the Black Widow Company); otherwise, they have their line regiments, Zeta Battalion, Seventh Commando, Hephaistos Station, their transport and WarShip fleets, and whatever they have on Outreach. But that all belongs into the Wolf's Dragoons article, and the individual regiments only got articles because the regiment is the cutoff size here on Sarna BTW where unit articles get split up into Master Articles (for units of brigade size upwards) plus articles for the individual regiments. The master article would get too big and cluttered otherwise. (Kinda funny. In the real world, regiments have essentially been reduced to administrative units while battalions are the most prominent formation in actual use...) Frabby (talk) 10:24, 30 December 2017 (EST)

I can see the sense for the Galatean Defense Force, as I think (IIRC) that it's effectively the state military of the Galatean Defense League or whatever the Remnant equivalent was, so to me it's much the same as having categories for the state militaries of tiny periphery states like the Rim Collection or the Fronc Reaches. I don't think we should have categories for groups that are actually the equivalent of brigades within the mercenary community, though. BrokenMnemonic (talk) 12:22, 30 December 2017 (EST)

For me the important thing is to keep as mercenary only the unit and have the regiments that form them linked to the gl9bal unit. If you feel subcategories are not needed, let's delete them. The point is that mercenary units should be considered only the global command and not the building parts.
