System Description[edit]
The Chertan system is located near the Dubhe and Wing systems[3][4] and consists of a class A3V primary orbited by three worlds, of which the innermost world, Chertan I, is habitable.[1]
System History[edit]
The Chertan system was colonized during the First Exodus from Terra.[5]

Chertan I is the first planet in the Chertan system and has two moons named Osei and Pelipa.[1]
Planetary History[edit]
Star League[edit]
Chertan was originally settled to capitalize on the large amounts of mineral and metal resources. Despite being water poor, the presence of these natural resources allowed mining, smelting, refining and manufacturing operations to thrive. The citizens would export heavy machinery and metals and use the profits to purchase food from nearby agricultural worlds. This balance lasted until after the fall of the Star League.[1] The Free Worlds League landed troops on Chertan in March 2775 ostensibly as a "relief force" though they soon demanded SLDF troops depart. Chertan was one of the first of almost a score of Terran Hegemony worlds that the League would occupy as the Hegemony collapsed but before the First Succession War [1][35][11]
First Succession War[edit]
While de facto controlling Chertan for nearly a decade, in 2783 the League formally annexed the planet.[11][36] During Operation SPIDERWEB the Wing Pincer assaulted Chertan, only to have it retaken shortly afterwards.[37] Located close to the Lyran Commonwealth, Chertan was frequently targeted by LCAF raids. These raids left the world covered in scars, and damaged the few farms capable of feeding the population. Starving citizens rioted several times, and eventually the noble ruler Viscount Ronald Marley was deposed in 2820.[1][38] Chertan had been a mighty industrial center under the Terran Hegemony, but the First Succession War reduced the standard of living to subsistence level.[39][40]
Second Succession War[edit]
During the Interdiction imposed on the League by ComStar, generally called the ComStar War, the League consolidated its forced inwards, virtually abandoning Chertan. The Commonwealth occupied Chertan in 2845, though the League recaptured the world in 2853 during "La Reconquista".[41][42]
Jihad[edit]
By the time of the Jihad the world had lost its heavy industry as most companies relocated to more habitable planets.[1] Chertan was occupied by the Word of Blake during the Jihad, and incorporated into the Word of Blake Protectorate; forces operating under the command of Duchess Alys Rousset-Marik liberated Chertan in January 3078 as a part of Operation SCOUR.[26] Chertan was one of four worlds to be hit simultaneously by forces operating on the Free Worlds League front of SCOUR on the 3rd of January; the First and Second Chertan Protectorate Militia Divisions struck at the Com Guard Fourth Army almost as soon as the Com Guard forces had made planetfall, and nearly succeeded in forcing the allied coalition forces back off the planet. Ultimately, the greater experience possessed by the Fourth Army carried the day, with the Com Guard forces pushing the Protectorate Militia Divisions back until their position became impossible to defend, leading to their surrendering.[43][44][45][46]
Dark Ages[edit]
When the Fortress Republic plan was implemented, Chertan joined with Tara Campbell to form the core of the "Republic Remnant"[47]
In 3144 a Binary of an unknown Wolf Guards Cluster fought a Trial of Possession (and then a Trial of Grievance) against members of the Republic Armed Forces in the "Remnant."[48][49][50]
In June 3149 Chertan fell to the Wolf Empire.[51][52][32][53]
ilClan[edit]
After the conclusion of the ilClan Trial, the Wolf Empire found itself in a precarious situation. The lack of military forces was particularly profound on Chertan where the Second Covenant Guards occupied the planet for the Covenant Worlds without any conventional resistance. Despite this, a small insurgency developed.[54]

Geography[edit]
With only a sixth of the surface of Chertan covered by water, the geography of Chertan is defined by the name and location of the various large water bodies rather than by continent. Chertan has three large bodies of water: the Eerie Sea, the Huron Sea and the Ontario Sea. The Eerie Sea is the northernmost of the three, while the Huron Sea is located in the southern hemisphere.[1]
Planetary Locations[edit]
- Altonia: third largest city on Chertan, located near the eastern edge of the Ontario Sea.[1]
- New Pittsburgh: the second largest city on Chertan, located near the Eerie Sea.[1]<ref name=HM(TFWL)p30b>
- Theleopolis: the planetary capital city, located just south of the Huron Sea.[1]
Companies and Industries[edit]
- Arista Chemicals: largest mineral mining and refining operation on Chertan in the thirty-second century; located in Altonia.[1]
