When the Tikonov Grand Union formed from the earlier Tikonov Union and Chesterton Trade League the armed forces of the Chesterton Trade League - the Chesterton Army - were restructured into a new brigade within the Grand Union military, the Chesterton Regulars. In addition to incorporating existing formations such as the Chesterton Cuirassiers and the various Chesterton Cavalry regiments into the Chesterton Reserves the Tikonov Grand Union also established the Chesterton Border Guards.[1]
The Chesterton Border Guards were raised from various militia units within the Chesterton worlds but never really raised their skill level much past that of their militia predecessors; a distinctly second-tier unit within the Chesterton Regulars,[1] the Chesterton Border Guards would survive the Tikonov Grand Union and the formation of the Capellan Confederation - barely - but in 2388 the surviving remnants of the Border Guards were merged together to form the Ariana Fusiliers.[2]
