Chiaroscuro is a short story by Randall N. Bills that was included in Total Warfare.
Plot Summary[edit]
The story follows the path of the Clan Jade Falcon ProtoMech program over four years, from the introduction of the Erinyes, through the collapse of the official program, to the growth of a scientist caste-led shadow program. Nikol, a ProtoMech pilot deeply attuned with her Roc, suffers from the loss of the integration she needs, and is inducted by scientist Joach into former Scientist-General Etienne Balzac's shadow program.
The failure of the ProtoMech program was deliberate. Etienne had made sure of its cancellation, in order to move it out of the eyes and hands of Khan Marthe Pryde and the Clan Council.
