Clement XX was the Pope of the New Avalon Catholic Church, on New Avalon, as of 2796.

History

In response to a epidemic of racism against people of Oriental ethnicity in the Federated Suns, which arose after the invasion by the stereotypically Japanese Draconis Combine during the First Succession War, Clement XX sought to support First Prince John Davion's attempt to calm the associated unrest by issuing a decree in 2796 which condemned racism and made it punishable by excommunication from the New Avalon Catholic Church. The decree stated, in part, that:

“

... racism cannot coexist with the love of God, and those that practice it will find themselves outside the Grace of God.

”

While this was initially successful, racist violence again increased after the Kentares Massacre in late 2796 and early 2797, which enflamed anger across the Federated Suns. This continued until the aftermath of an incident with Armed Forces of the Federated Suns Captain Wesley Yoshido, who returned home from the frontlines to find his parents murdered by a racist mob, and was in turn killed after attempting to prevent a lynching in late 2795.

Clement XX sought to take advantage of the change in public sentiment this later provoked, by making an appearance at a famous New Avalon Buddhist temple with First Prince John Davion on 15 September 2796, where both men appealed for an end to the racist violence and a refocusing on the real enemy of the Draconis Combine.
