The Covenant Worlds were a proto-state formed after the Republic of the Sphere retracted behind the Fortress Wall. It later became a province of the Free Worlds League.

History[edit]

Thaddeus Marik had long planned to induce a crescent of Republic worlds from Phecda to New Canton to form alliances with their neighbours, with the ultimate aim of convincing these proto-states to unify into a state large enough to unite the former Free Worlds League. The civil war Thaddeus anticipated arrived, but his plans were thrown into disarray when Exarch Jonah Levin activated a contingency called the Fortress Republic, retracting the Republic's borders and throwing the worlds Thaddeus hoped to absorb into chaos. The Senate Alliance split the region Marik had planned to unify in two, and even occupied his intended capital, Augustine. This cut Thaddeus off from the Tall Trees Union, and three proto-states under Thaddeus' influence failed or broke away from him, leaving only two, the Protectorate Coalition and Covenant Worlds by August 3137.[1]

The Covenant Worlds initially had three member planets (Miaplacidus, Nathan, and Alphard), but in that month two more, Connaught and Acubens, joined, doubling the state's population and industrial output. The Parliament of the Covenant Worlds grew rapidly and became caught in seemingly endless debates as to how to bind the nation together. One measure they passed was installing Thaddeus Marik as Warden, leading to him and his assets aligning with the young nation. Thaddeus' agents managed to secure a political and economic alliance with the Protectorate Coalition, but political union along the lines Thaddeus had originally envisioned was still years away at best.[1]

By October 3137, Thaddeus Marik felt that the (then) five-world state would not be able to fend off others on its own. Thaddeus traveled on a diplomatic mission to the Oriente Protectorate to broker an economic and military alliance, which was achieved in a way he had not expected. Instead of just signing an alliance as partners and equals, Thaddeus was asked to marry Captain-General Jessica Marik in order to legitimize her membership in House Marik. Their Warden accepting this political marriage elevated the Covenant Worlds' status and strengthened the ties between the two nations.[citation needed]

In February 3138, Thaddeus returned to the Covenant Worlds to muster his nation's forces to form what would become that nation's first joint expedition force to aid Oriente in the Andurien War. The force became known as the Covenant First Expeditionary Force. The unit's first action was to secure the planets Savannah[2] and Remulac from Lyran control in May.[citation needed] The two duly joined the Covenant Worlds.[citation needed] Covenanter forces then took the worlds of El Giza[3] and Mosiro[4] for Oriente.

Members of the Court of Parliament and the President journeyed to Atreus on the 3 July 3139 for the swearing-in of Jessica Marik as Captain-General of the newly unified Free Worlds League, which they would join as a province.[citation needed] In September 3139 the Covenant Worlds were attacked by the forces of the Wolf Empire. During the fighting Thaddeus Marik was killed.[5]

Politics[edit]

The primary political body of the Covenant Worlds was the parliament, headed by it's president. During the first year of the Covenant's existence the parliament grew from three members to three dozen, necessitating the takeover of the Miaplacidus Christian Liberal College's Humanities Building to form their new capital building, the Court of Parliament. Parliament appointed an official called the Warden, who served as commander-in-chief of the Covenant's military and police forces.[1]

Military[edit]

When the Covenant Worlds were founded their military was disproportionately large for their size. Despite this the Covenant's military was outclassed by their hostile neighbours in the Marik-Stewart Commonwealth and Lyran Commonwealth, which motivated the Covenant to seek alliances with their neighbors as a deterrent.[1]

Economy[edit]

In 3137 the Covenant Worlds possessed two major industrial planets, Alphard and Connaught, but even decades after the Word of Blake Jihad the military industries of said worlds were operating below their historic peak. Thanks to Thaddeus' efforts to ally the Protectorate Coalition Kali Yama and Kong Interstellar Corporation were in talks to assist each other in rebuilding their capabilities. Talks between Quikscell and Marian Arms had been less productive. The Covenant's other major economic assets were Nathan and Acubens, whose prodigious agricultural outputs made them regional breadbaskets.[1]
