Star Captain Cyril Herling was a Star Captain of Clan Widowmaker during Operation KLONDIKE. Herling is also the founder of the Herling Bloodname. Star Captain Herling may have been the first Clan Warrior to die in the Pentagon Worlds during KLONDIKE.[1]

Operation KLONDIKE[edit]
Tasked with the liberation of the Dagda system, including the pacification and of the sparefarer enclave at the system's Nadir, Clan Widowmaker promoted Herling to the rank of Star Captain. Herling was assigned to the Black Venom, a Lola III-class destroyer, for the mission. Herling decided to jump to a point within point-blank range among the ships parked at the Nadir. However, the plan backfired, when several ships broke away from the group, rather than surrender. Though the Black Venom was able to destroy one of the JumpShips before it could attempt a Jump, the proximity of the rest of the fleet prevented clear firing solutions, and a pair of desperate spacefarer JumpShips attempted a simul-jump, an unproven Jump method in which two independent JumpShips attempt to use one Kearny-Fuchida Bubble. The pair of ships exploded, causing nearby ships to also explode. From orbit over Dagda, the resulting chain-reaction appeared to be a single explosion with such magnitude, crews mistakenly thought they were witnessing the detonation of a large thermonuclear device. Support crews spent a week searching for and rescuing survivors, while merchant- and technician-caste cleanup crews spent months clearing wreckage.[1]
