His valor and sacrifice the trigger for the creation of the McCleary Award for Heroism, Dan McCleary was a Lyran Commonwealth aerospace fighter pilot flying during the Third Succession War.[1][2][3]
History[edit]
As of 3012, Dan McCleary was a legendary ace Chippewa pilot who took part in the defense of Laiaka system that year from unknown raiders. Accompanied by a pair of Lucifers, McCleary stumbled upon an Overlord-class DropShip escorted by six heavy fighters. Badly outgunned from the start, McCleary and his escorts held their own for several minutes before he dove his Chippewa into the heavily damaged DropShip. The explosion of his craft and ammunition crippled the Overlord's already-damaged engines, sending it crashing onto the planet below.[1][2][3]
McCleary's heroic sacrifice would be honored by the Lyran Commonwealth with the creation of the McCleary Award for Heroism. His son Hank, also a Chippewa pilot would ultimately become the first recipient of the award after his actions at the Battle of Alexandria.[1][3]
