Major General David Rutherford was the commander of the Star League Defense Force's 135th Royal BattleMech Division from 2759 to at least 2764.[1]

Rutherford was a descendant of Major General Bruno Rutherford, the inaugural commander of VIII Corps during the Reunification War, and had a career ambition to ascend to lead the same unit. In pursuit of this goal, he turned down opportunities to lead other Corps, waiting for his preferred VIII Corps. With an excellent record of performance leading VIII Corps' 135th Royal BattleMech Division, as of 2764 it was considered likely he might soon achieve his goal.[1]
