The Economic War Powers Act was a legal act passed by the Federated Suns government in 2802, placing restrictions on what items can legally be traded with the Capellan Confederation and the Draconis Combine.[1] [2]
Overview[edit]
The deep distrust of both realms turned into deep hatred thanks to the early Succession Wars, so that even during relatively calm periods those businesses and traders who travelled into either realm often faced open hostility upon their return. The bitterness eventually became formal government policy with the introduction of the Economic War Powers Act in 2802, a group of highly restrictive laws that placed heavy limitations on inter-realm trade. The Act is cited as example where rather than the more open-slather approach practiced by the Lyran Commonwealth, the Federated Suns actively uses its economy as a weapon against external enemies, making it the smallest inter-realm trader of the Great Houses during the Third Succession War.[1] [2]
At its heart, the Act has a list of items strictly forbidden for trade with House Kurita and Liao, similar to the Terran Hegemony's Mother Doctrine, the Act focused on blocking the export of any items with military potential as well as any piece of Star League-level technology. Those who were caught violating the Act were tried for treason and suffered the same fate as any traitor to the realm if convicted.[1] [2]
Some items are not forbidden by Economic War Powers Act, most notably live entertainment, with the Three Houses Entertainment Agency one of the few FedSuns firms to travel back and forth between enemy realms. Critics however point to Three Houses as a suspected front for the intelligence gathering efforts of the Department of Military Intelligence and MIIO as justification for the exclusion of live entertainment from the Act.[1] [2]
