History[edit]

Father Elfego Goldstein was a Catholic priest and a MechWarrior who served in the Seventeenth Recon Regiment, also known as Camacho's Caballeros, and was one of those serving in the Caballeros in 3056 when they were employed by Chandrasekhar Kurita to provide security for one of his companies, Hachiman Taro Enterprises. Elfego was from a family with a tradition of pious dedication to the Catholic church dating back to the era when many Jews who felt politically alienated had converted. Elfego was one of several Christian clergy who served as combatants within the Seventeenth, including two Protestant chaplains and the Jesuit priest Father Doctor Roberto "Call me Bob" Garcia. One of the points of minor tension within the Seventeenth - at least, for the Christian clergy within the regiment - was that at the time the regiment took up its contract with Chandrasekhar Kurita, two of the Caballeros battalions were commanded by religious leaders, neither of whom were Christian in denomination or faith. Second Battalion was commanded by Force Commander Rabbi Maccabee Bar-Kochba, while the Third Battalion was commanded by Force Commander Peter "Singer" White Nose Pony, a Navajo Singer. It was a problem that had no obvious satisfactory resolution, as none of the MechWarrior-qualified Christian priests had the leadership and command characteristics needed to be successful as battalion commanders, and Colonel Carlos Camacho's appointment of his son Gavilán "Falcon" Camacho to command First Battalion had prompted some of the friction over the issue.[1]
