The Farwell system was home to at least one habitable world or construct and as of 3145 was located in the Markesan Operational Area of the Crucis March within the Federated Suns.[1][2]

System Description[edit]

Farwell is located near the Everett and Ulan Batar systems.[3]

System History[edit]

The Farwell system was colonized during or shortly after the First Exodus from Terra.[4]

Planetary History[edit]

Early History[edit]

The world of Farwell was originally one of the Chesterton worlds, but the border wars between the various states in the area saw Farwell in the hands of the Federated Suns by the time the Capellan Confederation came into being.[20][49]

Star League Era[edit]

Prior to the fall of the Star League, an SLDF commander used the equipment at his disposal to build large, open air greenhouses full of Terran vegetation on Farwell. They were built in an effort to combat low morale by allowing soldiers an opportunity to walk among plants and not be completely confined indoors.[50]

First Succession War[edit]

In 2795, following the appointment of Sandol Quinn as regent to Ilsa Liao, the Capellan Confederation Armed Forces launched an invasion of the Federated Suns intended to capture the politically significant Chesterton system. Planned by Quinn, the operation was intended to take advantage of the AFFS' continuing focus on trying to resist the massive Draconis Combine invasion of the Federated Suns, which stood poised to capture New Avalon itself. The first worlds to be targeted were Caselton and Mirach; Quinn assigned mercenary commands to the invasions, units that had originally been Star League Defense Force commands, and the defending forces were in a brittle state thanks to the damage the Combine invasion had inflicted on supply lines and constant efforts to aid forces fighting on Combine-occupied or contested worlds. The result in both cases was a swift victory for the Confederation, with the mercenaries taking the worlds and then CCAF line regiments moving into secure them; by August the invasion forces were ready to launch fresh attacks. The second wave of attacks targeted Demeter and Farwell; elements of the Northwind Highlanders were assigned to attack Farwell, where they once again found themselves fighting demoralized and understrength AFFS forces. By April 2796 Farwell was securely held by Capellan forces, allowing the CCAF to move on to the invasion of the nearby Sanilac system.[14]

Farwell was one of several worlds the Confederation managed to capture and hold during the First Succession War, despite a heavy counterattack by the Federated Suns after Chancellor Ilsa Liao offered to withdraw her claim to the title of First Lord of the Star League and to instead support Paul Davion's claim if the Federated Suns would return Chesterton to the Confederation.[20][49] His response was to reject the proposal and dispatch the Third and Fifth Crucis Lancers to assault Ulan Batar and Farwell, igniting two years of active warfare throughout the Chesterton region.[51]

The Federated Suns recaptured Farwell in March 2809, and battles in the region would continue between the second and third waves of the AFFS counteroffensive against the Draconis Combine.[18] Although the Confederation managed to recapture Farwell and the nearby Mirach and Ulan Batar systems by the time the First Succession War ground to a halt, the AFFS recaptured and held the more significant worlds of Chesterton and Demeter.[52]

Military Deployment[edit]

Geography[edit]

Farwell is a harsh, cold world. The high oxygen and low temperatures take a heavy toll on machinery and manpower. Life is only possible with specialized equipment and habitats. However, the rare earth and petrochemical deposits on world, and the crews that run the mines, are highly valuable and thus need to be protected.[citation needed]
