History[edit]
Originally formed shortly after the founding of the Free Worlds League,[2] the Fifth Free Worlds Guards reentered service in 3064 as part of Captain-General Thomas Marik's military reforms. The unit's first official duty was to provide security for the Second Star League conference held on Marik in 3064 and spent the next three years proving its worth as a military force. While many of the Fifth's soldiers had been transferred from front-line units and the unit's performance in exercises was exemplary, it had yet to see actual combat by late 3067.[3]
At the end of the Jihad, the Fifth were among the units gifted to the Republic of the Sphere[4] and were, like all such units, eventually broken up and reforged into newly commissioned Republic Armed Forces regiments. Some parts of the Fifth Free Worlds Guards were included in the core of the IV Principes Guards.[5]
The Fifth Free Worlds Guards regiment was reformed sometime after the Charter of Incorporation was signed in 3139. The Fifth initially consisted of the survivors of the Iron Guard unit, as well as recent graduates from the Princefield Military Academy. To improve their experience, the Fifth also recruited several retired officers from the Duchy of Oriente's Duke's Own Corps of Foot and Horse. Since their formation they spent most of their time fighting off reconnaissance raids by the Capellan Confederation.[1]
In 3145 the unit was split into three smaller commands, garrisoning Hassad, Les Halles, and Calloway VI.[6]
